GuestOne more update: When I was hired for the crisis position, I told them I would be looking for a traditional counseling position when I passed the highest exam. That happened. I now am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and have accepted a full-time position with an agency. I work with underprivileged clients. I also am continuing to work with LDS Family Services part-time, which I absolutely love.
My direct supervisor in the part-time job knows I am not orthodox. That issue came up with one Bishop who expressed concerns that I was too liberal. My supervisor told him a better word would be inclusive, meaning simply I want to love and help and not judge everyone in any way I can without regard to their beliefs or practices. We had talked about me as liberal in the sense of “giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not”, so she shared that with him. She described me as faithful and active. The leader accepted that.
I absolutely LOVE my work with LDS Family Services. I can weave “the pure Gospel” into many sessions, as appropriate, and I can address culture vs. doctrine vs. theology vs. etc. for members who want that as part of the counseling. I have worked already with people who don’t fit the stereotypical Mormon norm – and members who do. It has been wonderful. I would do it full-time in a heart beat if I could – and I hope it will be possible in a couple of years, when my full-time hiring incentive bonus period ends. If so, I will see select clients privately, as well.
I have very little free time, so my participation will be spotty and somewhat binge-like. Thanks for all you are doing to keep this going so well. It is impossible to state adequately how much I appreciate, respect, and love you all.
