minor curiosity. the article mentions that those excommunicated cannot partake of the sacrament.

Do we not permit everyone to partake of the sacrament including children and investigators? Why make an exclusion for the excommunicated?

Once when I was in the bishopric the SP was in our ward presiding. There was a recently ex’ed member there sitting in the foyer. The SP asked me to go out in the foyer during the sacrament and observe whether or not he took the sacrament. I was instructed not to say anything or try to prevent him from taking the sacrament, I was to observe, return and report. Obviously it’s unusual to have a bishop’s counselor in the foyer during the sacrament. The guy refused the sacrament. I don’t know what would have happened if he took it.

Sometimes I visit an orthodox forum just to see what the self righteous folks there are talking about (that probably spells out which one it is without saying lds.net 😈 ). Sometimes I find people there asking real questions that they can’t answer. Anyway, a couple months back they were having a discussion about nonmembers taking the sacrament. Some said the handbook states that we shouldn’t prevent nonmembers from taking it, but others quoted scripture about not letting those who are unworthy take it. A couple of them went so far as to tell investigators they shouldn’t take the sacrament. Apparently their self perceived authority is higher than the bishop’s. One of them was a woman – I probably should make her bishop aware that she supports OW and teaches things in opposition to the handbook.

Yeah, you’ve got to be careful in that area. People can get easily offended over that sort of thing. I know a few that got cornered and they decided that it would be best to simply not come back.

My take, and not to derail the thread: non members, children, and excommunicated people are just eating bread, drinking water, and getting whatever meaning they are getting out of the experience. The only difference is that they aren’t renewing LDS covenants. Seems like making that distinction could appease both sides.

Besides, you catch more flies with honey. Desperate for converts? Don’t go out of your way to make someone feel like they aren’t a part of the group.

I think most people fall into the live and let live category. All it takes is one sacrament police member to give an entire unit fits.

If he wanted to take sacrament, I’m sure in plenty of wards and branches, folk wouldn’t recognise him.
