I know, maybe not the first name that would come to mind (on second thought, maybe he’s an obvious choice) – but either way I think Ray is a fairly unique and interesting Mormon. Obviously his story could include his passion for the StayLDS mission (and related topics like Elder Wirthlin – my personal “agenda” stated). Additionally, I see him as someone that could potentially widen the audience for Mormon Stories – because he is, by definition, a “faithful” “believing” member so he can and I’m sure naturally does address topics in a way that feels comfortable to traditional members. On the other side of the coin I think he can say things that makes everyone think.

Personally, I find his personal paradigm interesting (as told in his “bright night of the soul”) and his concern for the “one” noble and endearing. As far as “all across” the Mormon spectrum, I think he’s an interesting one for the “traditional” side.

I think the minds here could also suggest a couple more elements of his story that would be cool to draw out.

    What do you guys think?

I second the nomination. Ray is as TBM as they come, with some really heterodox ideas. I think it would be interesting to learn more about Ray.

I think it would be interesting. And I see Ray as having a personal mission of lending support and compassion for those who struggle. I think that topic “compassion for those who struggle” — taken from a faithful/believing perspective, could be something that has the potential of helping a lot of people; both members who may need to think compassionately in a new light, and “disaffected” who could benefit from a possible trend toward greater acceptance of them with their “changed perspectives” in the church.

    What do you think John?

John, my work schedule got messed up last time we tried to connect, but I’d like to work it out at some point. Call or e-mail me with a suggestion on another time that will work for you.

    Ray,

After next week (semester’s end), I’m totally ready.

I am very much looking forward to this.

Cool! One question I would love to see addressed:

“From a believer’s perspective, how do you frame the process of disaffection in a way that does not become threatening to your own belief?” or “From your perspective, what IS the process of disaffection? What happens?”

I would love to see an episode here that my fully orthodox friends and family could relate to. I know Ray has a tremendous love for those who struggle. I think he also has plenty of quotes from Elders Wirthlin & Uchdorf to back him up in his cause!
