Contacted by beings from a planet near Kolob, yes. However, any angel who visited Joseph has been, or will be, a resident of Earth. That’s the standard LDS view, at least. Just as plausible as the concept that an all powerful God visited him. Well, since Alien = extraterrestrial, and God isn’t of this world, one can definitively conclude that Joseph Smith, did in fact, receive a visit from an alien. :lolno: I’ve always found the alien/creator theories fascinating, especially the one about the race of the Elohim. Very fascinating, though being the cynic I am, I don’t put any weight in any of them…
The late great Phillip K. Dick did several novels with perceptive religious themes eg Valis and Ubik. But the Divine Invasion is most interesting in this context as “God” decides to mount an alien invasion of Earth. I know some folk think our great religions, including the Old Testament are in fact cargo cults.
I missed this post when it first came out. My kids and I love watching Ancient Aliens, mostly for the humor value. We just saw two back to back episodes based on this premise. Moroni was an extraterrestrial. The gold plates were a communication device to contact the aliens and channel their input (or information about ancient civilizations they were involved with). It was very interesting, but my 11 year old was scoffing the whole time. The 15 year old and I loved it. We always like to repeat the show’s catch phrase by saying in a skeptical voice “Or did they?” “Or are they?” and so forth. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have already been visited, but these folk like Sitchin and Von Daniken often come up with silly suggestions to back up this idea. The prog you mention Hawkgrrl is similar. There are some notable similarities with modern abductions – bright lights, paralysis etc which are NOT deliberate or conscious on JS’ part and suggest something else. What’s going on? He may well have experienced missing time too. But suggesting gold plates were alien communication device is plain daft.
And according to reports Travis Walton was a member of the church. The movie Fire In The Sky showed a Mormon chapel, had a typical Mormon prayer in it, and one of the rowdy characters played by the actor who played the hero in the movie Nightbreed make a derogatory about Travis Walton and some of the other members of their group being Mormons. Very interesting, ILC, I hadn’t heard that. I haven’t actually seen the film, but know the trailer and the poster. (Don’t fancy having nightmares) Have seen Communion though. Whitley Streiber seemed to think there was a spiritual element to it all.
I didn’t notice that when I first saw the movie. Then I read a comment from the website Famous Mormons about Travis Walton being a member of the church and the saw the movie again a few months ago and then I saw the Mormon references and made the connection. These guys think so
