So two of my children have some issues. Both have sensory integration issues which means they have trouble in environments where there is too much or too little sensory input. They manifest either sensory avoiding (tuning out, daydreaming, refusing to make eye contact, etc) or sensory seeking (moving around, running, rocking, at inappropriate times) depending on how their brains are interpreting the ambient stimulation at any given moment. Initially we thought they were both autistic but in other areas, they are very normal. Their ability to control these impulses has increased as they’ve gotten older and I finally felt they were ready for music lessons. We tried a few years ago but they just weren’t ready.

So today they started lessons with a new teacher. I found the teacher on the internet. We’d never met. I had no recommendations. It was just a crazy, impulsive leap into the unknown.

So he shows up tonight and he’s in his mid 30s and was very good with both of the boys. It wasn’t the most organized lesson but he worked with them patiently and was encouraging throughout the lessons. It was clear from the moment we met that he has learning disabilities of some sort (he later confirmed this in conversation). He also had trouble making eye contact – typical symptom of sensory integration – but was obviously intelligent – a little OCD but in a good way – socially awkward – but good-natured.

He was the perfect teacher for my boys. He was unorthodox and it was like he was communicating with them in their own language.

It was fascinating to see and hear.

I’ve spent so much of my life with these boys trying to help their square personalities fit into society’s round holes. It was heartwarming to see them in an environment where they really fit.

It just makes me think there are some people with the right backgrounds and experiences to help others. We sometimes look at our weaknesses as a negative, but perhaps God doesn’t. Perhaps we each have unique gifts, and like this teacher, your boys will have their gifts to offer others as they grow up and develop them.

As a music teacher of kids at times myself, I think this is a cool story.

What is just as interesting is that it is an interesting analogy for people like us here at StayLDS. Unorthodox in some ways, like your music teacher, we have the ability to reach people who are also having faith transition issues that other traditional believers cannot reach very well. We have a certain degree of empathy because we have walked the road less travelled.

I experienced this a few weeks ago when our HPGL stopped being the HPGL. He told me he had problems with the temple, and that was his reasons for exiting the position. Plus I think he is just plain tired of it, as I was at one point. I feel like we are on the same team and both came out with reasons why we are still active anyway.

It as like drinking at the well to talk to him and made for a wider net in my Ward.

This is exactly how I felt and why I posted this here! Our journeys have prepared us to meet and help others along the way. We are each uniquely prepared to benefit some of the pupils and benefit from some of the teachers we encounter.
