    Here’s Kirby’s latest if you haven’t read it: http://www.sltrib.com/home/2735299-155/kirby-being-in-charge-never-automatically” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.sltrib.com/home/2735299-155/kirby-being-in-charge-never-automatically

I like how he rather gently makes the point about leaders having made mistakes and not always being right.

    Quote:

Agreeing with someone just because they’re in charge is the best way I know of to prolong whatever it is that they may have gotten wrong. And let’s be clear about that — no group of human beings, regardless of how special they believe themselves to be, ever gets everything right.

I’m sure some think he’s walking pretty close to the line of what many would consider apostasy with this column, but I don;t see it that way. There is certainly a difference in the way he is making his point than others who might actually cross the line might make it.

And hence why you are here!

I just feel like saying it again – I want to thank all of you for giving me a place to come and heal from my faith crisis. I was already coming off the crisis part and I wish I would have come here earlier. It has helped me quite a bit. I even appreciate Ray keeping us from going too negative.

Funny thing happened (remember I live well over a thousand miles from any part of the Mormon corridor where there are few church members). I meet for the first time with a new therapist this week to help with my depression. Part of my depression I feel is coming from the many mental/emotional conflicts with my faith transition. I mentioned this to him and he said, “Oh – I lived in Sandy Utah for about 7 years and I did try to really learn about the LDS faith and the emotional issues they tended to experience. I didn’t expect that.

Might be, LH. I’m just saying that there are others who say essentially the same thing but do while attacking the current leadership – sometimes personally. The point can be made more civilly, as Kirby demonstrates. Nonetheless I also recognize there are undoubtedly those who think Kirby is stepping too close to the line on this one, although I think we might be surprised at how few.

And that is an interesting story about the therapist.

This is the money line for me

I agree, Mom – that one may be worthy of useful quote of the day.

HOW you say it I think does make a difference. I also think he’s trying to be a bit edgy…because he has a job to do. No one wants to read a story with no opinion or is bland vanilla.

But, in some ways…his article is a bit bland. What is he really saying? My paraphrase: The letter was read. Some people react one way, some another way. Why stay in the church? Because I want to.

There can be more uplifting angles to take on that letter reading than “Why stay in the church”. But…that was where he went with it.

I have a similar reaction as you, DJ. It doesn’t get close to the line for me. But I’m interested in how others see it, because sometimes I wonder if I am so open to diverse opinions I forget that those who hold power may not be (leadership roulette).

I said it on another forum, but Kirby is the Ron Swanson of Mormonism. http://media.giphy.com/media/Y7SeP7arJWBZ6/giphy.gif
