Laughing instead of Crying

My high school choir teacher was an amazing man. He had four severely disabled kids – physically and mentally. (long story)

I remember vividly hearing him talk about finding humor in difficult situations and saying:

If you don’t laugh, you cry. I don’t want to spend my life in tears.

I know that isn’t easy or a silver bullet cure, but I have never forgotten those words or the lesson they taught me.

If you can laugh at your situation, it creates this kind of healthy distance from it for a while.

I’ve laughed at myself a few times when I’ve found myself in such situations. The distance can be a relief — for a while…

But you still have to live with it eventually…
