I was saddened more by Coach Edwards’ passing than other recent passings in the church. I was a BYU student in the Edwards Era and felt that he was a humble man who wanted to succeed and win, but not at all costs. I appreciate that he rarely displayed anger at bad decisions or officiating.
I met him once at the St. George marathon where he was handing out finishers medals. He congratulated me and hundreds of other runners and hung medals around our sweaty and stinky necks himself. He probably stood at the finish line for hours and it was a small thing I will always remember.
He spoke in the 1984 general conference which is about the only time I can remember a non- GA speaking. I think that speaks to he respect he was held in by leaders of the church.
