“We hope it’s not lost that this is a memorial for children. And part of the sacredness of the gathering was the sacrifice that little children made, and mothers and fathers made to get here. And we see that in Utah today. You see immigrants coming here, looking for a better life and focusing on what they have to do to make a better life for their children. That’s really why this is important.

That is beautiful. No matter what brings you to a new land.

I do wonder though if the connection to Modern Immigrants was part of the core theme and message or if it was just a “one of” or “off hand” reference by Elder Craig C. Christensen of the Seventy.

    Quote:

“Utah is becoming more and more ethnically diverse [and] they’re all pioneers. So, this is really a way for us to highlight what Utah stands for,” said Utah Area President Elder Craig C. Christensen of the Seventy. That’s really why this is important.”

Outside that statement, I do not see anything else that makes the connection. Not in the remarks of Elder Ballard. Not in what I can see of the displays themselves. I just wonder if the headline “LDS Church Connects Past Pioneers and Modern Immigrants” might be overstating it.

Good point – but I personally am going with the headline I read. If lots of people see the article and the headline, and if they make the connection as a result, I am willing to compromise my general parsing standards. :P 😆

Hypocrisy is bad when someone else does it? 😳
