Hi Everyone, I’ve lurked so long I feel as if you should know me since I know all of you. Last night I tried to simplify my introduction. I’m not sure I succeeded but I’ll give it a try. I am the MBM of my marriage. My husband is NOM and has been for about 3 years.
I grew up in a wonderful faithful home. Most posters would call it TBM. I would agree, but to me it held balance, insight, and righteousness in a wonderful way. My own spirituality was enhanced for good from that home. My parents came from very opposing backgrounds. This gave me wonderful insight to LDS life and life in general. My maternal grandparents were members in name only. They were also the most genuine neighbors and friends I’d ever witnessed. From them I learned about caring for others. It was also my maternal grandmother who inadvertently set a standard for me. I had asked her one day why she wasn’t active in the church (I’d over heard her talking with my mom about the one time she taught a primary/sunday school class – and it’s nightmarish experience). She mentioned that she rarely heard any thing about Jesus Christ. She wasn’t a big Joseph Smith fan either. But she was a huge Brigham Young fan. That seperation alone taught me alot about perspective. My grandmother grew up in an orphanage in Salt Lake City. She loved the lay of the land. The square blocks, the deep gullys, the epoch plain crossing. I realized then we are all influenced in our convictions by many things.
Anyway I took her comment on Jesus Christ to heart and have carried it as personal banner in my church experience. I add to that a love of research and information. I always saw me dad praying with his scriptures opened beside him. He did this at 5:30 am – for himself. Not to be seen, but when I was rushing off to seminary I would glance in the darkened room and see his outline. The image became a magnet draw for scripture and prayer immersion. My mom is more of a history buff. So reading history eventually turned up.
Through out my married life I had always been the reader, studier, researcher. This helped us out when my eighth grade daughters teacher decided to study “Polygamy” as part of Manifest Destiny. The teacher knew there were 6 LDS kids in the room. She also knew the majority of the other students were Evangelical. My daughter came home with the assignment to disclose Joseph Smiths polygamy. In the back of my mind I knew he had participated. Internet searches were merely a battlefield of opinion. I decided to call The Church Historical Department. A wonderful man (whose name I gave to the teacher and didn’t keep) gave me the lowdown on JS and Polygamy. Besides the connubial details he left one remark that rang to me, “I wish the church would present this differently. It would help.” As a family we chose to take our findings to the teacher face to face. We explained our sources, gave the teacher the names, number etc. We then also explained that as a church we don’t dwell, teach, or really touch the subject. She was very kind about it. Six months later our daughter received the compassion award at school. We just thought it was a throw away award until after the ceremony. Two teachers came up after to tell us why she got the award. One of the teachers, was the “polygamy” teacher. What we didn’t know was that the other LDS families had stormed the principals office, demanded the teacher be fired for teaching lies, and eventually left the school. At that moment I was grateful for a grandmother who taught me to put Jesus teachings first.
My intro could go on. Suffice it to say I have been published in Sunstone magazine. I ran a blog about author John Dennis Fitzgerald who wrote,

Doug I invite you visit my website and blog on Mr. Fitzgerald. I spent many years reading, writing, geneolizing (is that really a word), traveling to Price, corresponding with living relatives and friends. It was a blast. Because of my research I was invited to speak at BYU in a panel discussion on his works. I gained even more insight about myself and people’s perceptions of the church from it. Mom3, what a great history! I loved reading it. We are lucky to have you hear (yeah, 😳 “here” too) with us. I hope you will have the opportunity to contribute to the positive sway of our discussions.I loved the Great Brain series. I occasionally wanted to know more about J.D.’s life.

NOMmeans New Order Mormon, and it refers to somebody whose faith has changed, and who is trying to figure out how to make the church work. The only nuance of difference between the NOM forums and the StayLDS forums is that the StayLDS forums emphasize exploring personally finding a new type of fulfilling LDS life. I don’t know what MBMmeans. Mostly Believing Mormon? Tom
I picked up MBM from a poster on the NewOrderMormon site. I may not have used it properly. I actually struggle with the titles/acronyms we have created. We apply them in an all encompassing manner, but for everyone of them there are exceptions. I choose More Believing Member because TBM seems to be applied with the indication that the member is blind, sheepled, etc. If I got it wrong – sorry. Thanks for asking for clarification.
I like MBM – as much as I like any label, that is. I also don’t like labels much, but they are helpful to identify trends and common stances. I found your introduction fascinating to read Mom3 — it doesn’t surprise me you’ve been published! I’m glad you decloaked and I’m looking forward to hearing more from you.
