I still maintain the church has this whole thing backwards. Missionary work is not primarily for the missionary – it’s for the unconverted.

It strikes me that it is to create an “us and them” mentality in our young people, and show them the hostility of the outside world. it’s not about the baptisms often, I’m afraid, it’s about the people who turn on them, and show them the bad side of the “gentile” public.

It’s my understanding that it takes 1-2 years to become a Jehovah’s Witness. The period of instruction for Catholicism is about a year. What I wonder when I see people baptised and then never show up or at best show up 1-2 times in church, is what’s the hurry.

Well, I suppose the main thing is to catch them before they die. By pushing some people to a fast baptism, we are chasing them away. We have an occasional investigator, a complete fantasist who turns up a few times every year, and then sinks back into drink. He is, I’m afraid, something akin to a psychic vampire, and until he stops claiming to be in the Marines, drinking, and creating scenes deliberately, he’s not going to get anywhere. What he doesn’t realize is that this is, actually his choice. Okay, it won’t solve everything, but it is he who must make that step.
