 Well, to be perfectly fair, many scriptures need to be taken somewhat out of context. After all, we are talking about sayings often made thousands of years ago in a world that no longer exists. I think it is important to be mindful of the context, but adaptation to our modern era is almost a requirement now.

Quote:33 For whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods of which I have spoken, and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.
If I can read this like Ray…this scripture doesn’t say you have to do your calling. It just says that if you do, you are sanctified and get physical renewal.

I just have to say, this made me grin.
🙂 To take it a step further, the sanctification mentioned is
ONLY“ unto the renewing of their bodies” and applies ONLYto the “ (singular) calling” given when Priesthood is obtained – NOTto “ (plural) callings” in the organizational running of the Church. Yeah, some people really do misinterpret verses from our scriptures and apply them in ways that aren’t consistent with their context.

GuestI thought it might make you grin Ray…now that I’ve learned to read like you do, I wonder if I could’ve had a rewarding career in law? (just kidding). September 21, 2013 at 7:35 pm #273793Anonymous

Then he spoke on the commandment to keep the sabbath day holy. And then he said something that made me go “huh?” …He said, “I’d also like to add the Lord’s commandment to fulfill our callings.”
Since when does the HC get to just make up commandments? I’m pretty sure this isn’t one of the ten given to Moses. It’s proabably mentioned in the D&C or somewhere, but I just found the way he said it to be odd…He went on to say that our callings in the church are “our sacred obligations to God” and that when we fulfill these obligations, particularly on Sundays, we will feel rested and renewed…Every single commandment could be made up as far as we really know for sure. To me the real questions about so-called commandments are what purpose do they serve, do they make sense, and are they worthwhile or not? In the case of the 10 commandments I don’t have a problem with them whether they came from God or man to begin with because they are mostly about preventing harm or not disrespecting God and they don’t sound like too much to ask out of the average person even now. So it makes sense why they would withstand the test of time much better than other “commandments” like the restriction against eating pork and shellfish. On the other hand, with commandments like tithing, the WoW, and the law of chastity not only do I see the “man behind the curtain” when it comes to their development and current interpretation but there are many cases where it just doesn’t make much sense to be quite so strict and unforgiving about some of the details attached to these traditional doctrines nowadays.
