And that, my friend, is the heart of the issue, is it not?
Definitely!
I wouldn’t even say it would all have to be a hardcore, stick to the letter type of book of doctrine, but something a bit deeper.
Mormonism has some really interesting ideas (as well as bizarre ones!) which shouldn’t all be hidden away.

There’s a case both ways. It’s like faith and works. One doesn’t really work without the other IMHO.

When I talk about people praying vs. going to humans as authority, my caution is more about relying on the arm of flesh, even leaders, without seeking one’s own personal revelation or insights. To me, that’s a question of absolving ourselves of personal responsibility, and I don’t think we need more mindless automatons in the church (or anywhere). We need people who can stand on their own spiritually, whether they are orthodox or not.

GuestI’m the last person to be an automaton HG, I’m too weird!!! However, it is good sometimes to have someone or something to turn to for advice. It’s like having a good parent, they’ll help you through the questions and crises of childhood, and raise you to be a good, kind and strong adult. Do I get personal insights? Yes.
Do I get sick of being bossed around? Yes.
Do I sometimes need to be bossed around, under certain circumstances? Yes! Yes! Yes!
So, I often have a problem buckling down, but on the other hand, I think there are times when we need to be told what we don’t actually want to hear, e.g. “you have a problem with drink”, or “you can’t bully so-and-so like that”. Maybe until we’re told we’re doing such things, we don’t know we’re doing them.
The Miracle of Forgiveness, which is not my favorite LDS book, did get me thinking about sins of omission. If we’re not doing certain things, and we don’t realize we should be, then sometimes a little outside help is needed. -
