GuestI saw this on the ldsliving website. The claim is: 55% of active LDS members support legalization of medical Marijuana. Does this sound right? I’m curious what others think.
Are there medicinal uses for alcohol within the WOW?

GuestI would absolutely support medical marijuana and it is my personal belief that it would be completely acceptable within the word of wisdom. The boy in this article is treated with oil extracted from marijuana plants. It has reduced the numbers of seizures he has dramatically. I challenge anyone to tell me why this boy should not be allowed to have medicine that helps him.
As for alcohol, if there was a legitimate medical reason to use it, I can’t see why there would be any problem with ingesting it. Then again, I’ve never heard of a legitimate medical reason for consuming alcohol.

GuestOne doctor recommended alcohol for a couple I know with with sexual dysfunction to make the wife more willing. They had been married for 5 years and had not consummated their marriage. So, there could be a medical use for it, although in a highly rare situation. April 29, 2016 at 11:45 am #311096Anonymous
GuestI have also investigated this and I am 100% for it. Usually it is an extract so it is not like people sit around and toke on a reefer. Utah has a serious pain medication addiction issue but the church is all but silent. But when med Mary Jane comes around they feel there are moral issues? I do t get it. Or the only way I can explain it is very old people reacting from their view from the 60’s. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

GuestDoesn’t surprise me at all. I support it completely.

GuestNo problem on my end, I’m for it. I live in a state where medical marijuana is legal. I’m actually for legalizing marijuana altogether, but I do see the pitfalls in doing so – yet I don’t see it as any more harmful than alcohol. April 29, 2016 at 2:24 pm #311099Anonymous

The main connection I would make with alcohol is that if anything my guess is that alcohol is actually more dangerous on average than marijuana so it doesn’t really make sense why marijuana should be illegal when alcohol is already legal other than that alcohol is so popular and relatively easy to manufacture so that makes it especially hard to prevent people from drinking if that’s what they want to do as we saw with the failed prohibition experiment whereas marijuana is still widely viewed as a drug of choice for various riff-raff and not worth openly tolerating at this point.
However, in this case we aren’t even talking about the legalization of marijuana in general but simply for prescribed medical use so if LDS Church members can already legally get a prescription for pain killers made from opiate derivatives and happily answer yes to the WoW temple worthiness question then I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to do the same thing in the case of medical marijuana. How do we know that marijuana should not be considered a “wholesome herb” as described in D&C 89 as long as used legally and responsibly? Some people are suffering from real pain so if there are doctors that think marijuana will be a safer and/or more effective way to treat them than some of the existing options then I don’t see why they should be denied this option just because some Church leaders apparently have a negative perception of marijuana and remaining hang-ups about it.

GuestI think it is all about how it is framed and the question posed to members. Most faithful mormons have no problems with medications when a prescription gives legitimate authority behind it. Without that authority and control, they are skeptical a person is justifying sin. With that slip of paper…all is good.
We have lots of doctors in our leadership.

GuestIt is my understanding that there are alot of prescriptions written for the membership. On average, more than other denominations. Has anyone else heard that too?

GuestI have heard that by state…Utah being the highest. I have not heard that by denomination.

GuestPost-Partum depression from lots of kids – very bad air quality – general rates of issues in western states – low use of alcohol as self-medication . . . I am not surprised, and I am aware of nothing that says it is disproportionate to Mormons in Utah – except in the case of post-partum depression.
