GuestI saw a membership activiation request today from someone who claims to be a current full-time missionary – “breaking the rules”, in his words. 1) I am a bit skeptical, just because I am wary of accepting a story like that. It very well might be true – but I am skeptical.
2) I don’t want to appear to be encouraging missionaries to break the rules, no matter the rule – and even if I think they might benefit from it, if I know them better.
3) I don’t want to get cross-wise with the Church in any way that is avoidable. Period.
4) I can think of SO many ways participation by an actively serving missionary could go badly – both for the missionary AND for the forum.
What does everyone think? How should we respond to a request like this?

GuestPsychic connection. I was just looking at that and about to post something here. I am also concerned for all the same reasons as Ray, and wanted to make sure everyone looks out for this young person. Username: Elarsforrealz
Justification text:
I’m an LDS Missionary, yes breaking th rules to join this sight during “mormon.org” time. I’ve found myself skeptical. A state I do not enjoy in anyone, especially myself. I think there is good in all things, and truth can be found in all things, but I don’t think, for example, that the dent in the car will tell you all about the person driving that car. You never know the story behind the dent til you ask the person who it belongs to. Even then you should not judhe that person on the story behind the dented vehicle. I learned of this sight from a friend. I would like to become a part. It’s my first forum ever. I’m learning my way around. I hope this gives you an understanding to allow my entry.

GuestI agree. If he just logs in as a person searching for answers, but not present himself as a missionary, and a rule-breaking missionary at that, there’d be no way to really stop him from participating and sharing ideas. But we don’t need a circus show act of a full-time missionary on the site with no real faith crisis, just a rebellious streak.

GuestWe have our first comments from the missionary – a comment on one thread and a post of his own. I moved his post to our parking lot section and sent him a PM and explained that we can’t have missionaries commenting here if it’s against the mission rules. I told him about moving his post and asked him not to break the mission rules by participating here.
I also sent SilentDawning a PM explaining what I did, since he commented on the post. (and I told him it was an excellent comment)

GuestHe responded. He understands and asked us to delete his account. (I have done so.) He said he found what he was looking for and wanted to let us know he thinks this is a wonderful site. He also thanked me for asking him not to comment here and to follow the mission rules. SD also understood – and said he moderated his response to the post knowing he was talking with a missionary.
All in all, it went as well as possible.

GuestWell done, sirs! The right course of action, certainly. Of course, he may pop up at NOM . . . September 5, 2011 at 5:37 am #245764Anonymous
