I won’t get into specifics but I’ve seen a few cases firsthand of leaders working with special needs youth to facilitate them serving a custom tailored full time mission.

I’ve seen that too. One guy got a mission working in the temple canteen.

There’s actually a whole mission like this in Salt Lake. The missionaries work in the church office building and other areas like the Family History Center. It is of course more of a service mission than a proselyting mission so those who have that burning desire to proselyte don’t get to do much of that. We had a young man a few years ago serve in that mission, and there’s actually a “waiting list” to get in. The young man in question is very high functioning, but I can see why he probably would not thrive in a traditional proselyting mission and it would be very difficult (but probably not impossible) to find appropriate companions who would be understanding and supportive enough – it’s difficult enough being with someone 24/7 without any extenuating circumstances. Like the young man Mom3 mentioned, he had a farewell, homecoming, report to the high council, etc., and is in every way considered a returned missionary.
