GB asked about what happened at MM in a post. Tom gave a really brief summary. I read John’s post explaining what happened, which fits my previous experiences with Cheryl. I locked the post, pending someone like Hawk adding detail, if she wants to do so.

If any of you want to re-open it and comment, it’s cool.

I opened it long enough to write a comment and then locked it again. I’m cool with it being unlocked, but I agree that we don’t want to air any dirty laundry. It’s been a tough week at MM, and I am deeply saddened by how it turned out.

I am, also – but I honestly can’t say I am surprised. I saw this coming a while ago – or, if not this, some kind of Cheryl-inflamed confrontation over moderation.

Ray, John’s reaction to Cheryl was incredibly swift and harsh–the rest of us were collateral damage. I’m sure he is stressed out this week, and our attempts to talk when he didn’t have time to talk exacerbated the situation.

I feel sad for everyone involved. Cheryl’s initial reaction to John’s closing comments was spot on. It is apparent to me John was reacting to Cheryl based on past experiences rather than the current situation. The fact that he went nuclear at the drop of a hat left us all speechless. Welker Watcher at Faith Promoting Rumor poured gasoline on the fire. I am utterly amazed that it melted down so fast.

I really respect John, and I wish him the best, but Cheryl and the rest of us didn’t deserve what happened.

I agree that what John did was not deserved, and I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. When I said “Cheryl-inflamed” I was thinking specifically about her personality and John’s.

I just meant that the two personalities together are combustible and an explosion was waiting to happen. I worry about both of them, for very different reasons – and a couple of similar ones.

When you have someone as committed to non-moderation as Cheryl is, and when you have someone as committed to even “harsh” moderation as John is (and as staunchly, “This is my blog, and I’m the boss in the end,” as John is) . . . I really think this was unavoidable in one form or another.

I’m excited to see what the new blog looks like and how it goes.

I threw in my $0.02 and an explanation for the lock down. Feel free to post whatever else you guys feel is helpful.

I agree with the lock, and think we should manage this topic even more than our normal editorial quality control.

We’re sort of caught in between, having relationships with John and everyone else. I’ve met Cheryl in person a few times at Atlanta OM get-togethers too. I like her a lot personally, even if I am not really a big fan of her laissez faire blog management style. But that’s her style, and I respect it. It does create a more edgy, dramatic and exciting form of content.

For me personally, I think I’ve come to the personal realization that I am not really a blog type of person anyway. I enjoy writing articles occasionally, but in real life, I tend to be rather disconnect from current events, trends and the excitement of social causes.

Let me extend a personal invitation to both of you to at least do some guest posts (perhaps more) at our new blog. It will be launched soon. (We’ve decided on a name, but I don’t dare share it quite yet.) I know I can speak for Hawkgrrrl and Jeff Spector in this new venture: we would love to have both of you contribute as often as you feel comfortable, especially as the dust settles from the new construction of the blog. (There have been a flood of emails between us working for consensus on the new blog, and it is exciting to be on the ground level of a new blog.) I personally really love both of your insights, and personally have great respect for both of you.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I am not really a blog person. I get the itch to write an article occasionally. I managed to write about 2 dozen for MM over the past couple years. I’m just not that into it though, and spend a lot of my available time here.

I totally wish you guys the best! I am sure it will be a super blog. You guys have great talent in your pool.

I might take you up on the offer if I have something to say. I really like the idea of having access to publish. That I really appreciate. I just don’t end up getting around to it.

I am a freelancer that is free but fails to lance. LOL!

Ok, let’s keep this under out hat, but I think our official launch date is Oct 4. The website is still under construction, but it is http://wheatandtares.org. There’s not much to see yet, but you can get a sneak preview. (We want to pick another theme, but I expect the logo won’t change.) Apparently LDS Anarchist already found it and left a comment. I think we will blitz the announcement on Oct 4, and of course tell everyone you know–but wait til Oct 4!
