David Campbell, Author of American Grace and professor at Notre Dame was interviewed regarding Mormonism and politics. I only listened to a little bit of it but it is very interesting. He backs up his statements with solid research. Of note: America is getting less religious while maintaining a belief in God. People are increasingly influenced by their politics on which church they join, or more recently the decision to become “Nones” or join no religion. Religion however doesn’t drive people’s political views. Except in the LDS church. Here, members stick to their religion foremost and are more willing to change their politics. A liberal leaning quote from a GA has a huge amount of influence on how LDS think. Quotes from LDS public affairs however has very little cred to most members.

As mormons, we grow up learning the interaction between religion and politics.

    – Joseph Smith tried to setup a City State so they could practice their religion more freely.

    – Perhaps influenced by Book of Mormon stories, but we seem comfortable with Theocracy when we have faith God is leading the prophet, and won’t lead us astray.

    – Constant messages from the pulpit that the world is becoming more wicked, and we must “remember” the Lord, which gives a conservative slant, more than a progressive mindset

    – Being led by Octogenarians

There are many factors that seem to influence us as members of the church on what political views are voiced in our meetings and by our friends.

    I would not agree that

I think many churches around the country and the globe drive people’s political views. But there are unique elements to Mormonism, which I thought were interesting in that podcast as well.
