Guesthttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.comhttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.com” class=”bbcode_url”> Last week we discussed my faith transition model. This week I share with you my personal journey working through those three phases. This is based on a paper I was asked to contribute to Terryl and Fiona Givens and hope that in understanding the three phases and the real life application in my personal faith journey, you might have added strength and support in your trials of faith. Thanks for listening.

http://mormondiscussion.podbean.com/2013/11/18/seer-stones-and-metal-plates/ ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://mormondiscussion.podbean.com/2013/11/18/seer-stones-and-metal-plates/ Critics cite The Church as intentionally creating a simple sanitized view of the Translation of the Book of Mormon. But what really happened? Here is my personal take on the Translation process and what I think is a very good shot at the real storyline. Did the Church intentionally hide information? What are we to make of Joseph’s “Treasure Digging”? We discuss this and much much more.

GuestWe are currently preparing to do an “Ask Me Anything” Q&A on Reddit. I am hopeful that those who struggle with questions and want a fresh perspective will take the time and make this a great experience for both of us. Guesthttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.comhttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.com” class=”bbcode_url”> We sit down with LDS author Susan Swann author of the book “Coming Home: A Mormon’s Return to Faith”
Description of her book:
Susan’s story of her painful journey away from her Mormon faith and her road back home delivers a message of hope and encouragement that will help others also struggling to find their way. The lovely scenes of family relationships that were so instrumental in her return, her engaging personal touches, and interesting allusions to scriptures, literature, movies, and music all contribute to capturing the reader’s interest in Susan’s story. Even though readers will quickly understand where her story is headed, they will be engrossed by the suspense she creates and the anticipation of seeing her spiritual journey come to its rewarding conclusion. Susan’s book is a captivating story well told.

If I can say so myself, This is an awesome episode!!!!!
http://mormondiscussion.podbean.comhttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.com” class=”bbcode_url”> Unity vs Diversity
Are these two ideals on two opposite ends of the Spectrum or are these two compatible allies in a Christlike effort to bring all unto Christ. I weigh in on these two ideals and attempt to show the following
– Why we sometimes feel the need to make others fit a mold simply because they are different?
– Where that false premise comes from?
– What does the Gospel and Christ’s authorized servants teach us?
– How can we be unified and yet diversified?

What flexibility do you mean?

GuestWe are being more open about our imperfections. (Pres. Uchtdorf acknowledging mistakes and the race announcement) We are giving people more room to disregard nonsense (Elder Christofferson saying not every statement by a leader is binding.)
We are making doubt and questions much more ok. We are also telling those with deep questions or lack of testimony to still “join with us”
The new youth curriculum is more flexible.
The leadership handbooks are much more flexible then past editions.
Joseph smith papers project is much more open about how we see things.
Church is not as quick to discipline over dissent
I see way more coming –
– new adult curriculum (next couple of years) and it will be like the youth curriculum
– more GC talks that hit at disregarding the nonsense
– We are doing more to humanize the prophets rather then set them on pedestals as we have done in the past (I was very frustrated with the recent lesson on how near perfect Joseph was, manual said he was as honest and truthful as anyone Lorenzo Snow knew and then the instructor took it even further)
We have and will continue to lighten up on painting leaders as near perfect and will more freely acknowledge how we don’t have it all figured out. I could likely name 2 dozen examples of our stating such things in GC talks and and other broadcasts.

http://mormondiscussion.podbean.comhttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.com” class=”bbcode_url”> Todays episode is an interview with Mark Ashurst-McGee. He is an employee of the Church History Department. He is also one of the editors on the Joseph Smith Papers project.
Bro. Ashurst-McGee received a B.A. and B.S. from Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1994,[4] and an M.A. in History from Utah State University (USU) in 2000. His master’s thesis on Joseph Smith’s religious development won the Reese History Award from the Mormon History Association. His dissertation was on Joseph Smith’s early social and political thought, and won the Gerald E. Jones Dissertation Award from the Mormon History Association. Through this training, he became a “specialist in documentary editing conventions and transcription methodology.” A BYU professor of religious education and colleague in the Joseph Smith Papers Project, Steven C. Harper, stated Ashurst-McGee “probably knows the field of documentary editing better than anybody that I know.
Ashurst-McGee is a member of the Joseph Smith Papers Project. Along with Richard L. Jensen and Dean C. Jessee, he co-edited the first volume to be published from the series, which was on the early journals of Joseph Smith. Released in 2008, the book became very popular and sold very quickly, prompting expanded additional printings. In 2009, it received the Steven F. Christensen Best Documentary Award (Mormon History Association) and a Special Award in Textual Criticism and Bibliography (Association for Mormon Letters). Bro Ashurst-McGee is expected to edit future volumes of Smith’s papers.

http://mormondiscussion.podbean.comhttp://mormondiscussion.podbean.com” class=”bbcode_url”> In today’s episode we explore who is called of God and where those called of God can be found. We end correlating this with understanding how we should treat those of other faiths.
– Are only leaders in the LDS church “called” of God?
– Is there a valid reason to be arrogant on any level because God has placed you in the LDS Church?
– Does LDS Doctrine and theology allow for us to see LDS leaders as only one small segment of those called of God to lead his children unto Salvation?
