Brian talks about his website and how it can be a resource to help those in disillusion of Mormonism to begin to open up the the deeper historical context, something needed if we are to reconstruct our faith while maintaining a testimony. GuestHey Bill, I don’t post on FB discussions because I try to keep my comments out of the public arena and away from loved ones who are troubled by my FC, but there’s a big discussion going down about your D&C 132 podcast and I wanted to add my $0.02. I listened to it this morning, and though I don’t find the theory compelling (because lets face it, I have no problem believing JS simply wasn’t a prophet anyway) but the principles you utilized to bolster the theory were gold. The letter to EE and the quote about cannon by BY were extremely useful. There are those who still think in black and white, to whom those will be of no use and thought of as proof of disbelief. But to those of us on the fringes, who understand why it is important to have church leaders past and present help us define revelation, cannon, prophecy and prophetic fallibility, it helps immensely to have clear, direct, authoritative quotes to keep from falling off the wagon and discounting everything the church has to offer. Though I am very far on the liberal end of literal belief in Mormonism, I believe in Mormonism as a truth that’s part of a larger whole, and a movement which adds to that whole by breaking through much of the tradition of early Protestantism, sacrificing sacred cows, and proving it could lead to a movement of great people. Helping to contextualize scripture and prophetic teachings help us in Mormonism land to approach our religion and work within it despite its problems. The alternative (that put forth by black and white thinkers) is to accept all the things the rest of us find reprehensible and just say “the Lord has not provided all the answers.” That response lacks thoughtfulness, but worst of all lacks accountability for one’s beliefs. Anyway, thanks, and don’t listen to the loud naysayers, especially those who would discount your level of belief or faith. p.s. Quinn interview: Uh-mazing

Craig talks about his own missionary experience as well as the adjustment most missionaries make from the pristine and elevated expectations to the real life experience of disappointment and feelings of failure that come with the reality of most missions. We discuss how he shifted those paradigms and how that has helped him moving forward. Missions are tough…. please in the comments share your experience so that others may not feel alone! Can we speak out when we get it wrong or is criticism of any kind uncalled for. What if what a leader says does irreconcilable, irrevocable, unrepairable damage? What if young people are living alone in tents in the winter and some who becoming so depressed and seeing no hope because of what others do, say, and behave towards them; they eventually take their lives? Can we speak out? Can we say that teaching is wrong? Can we criticize that teaching?

We talk about How the cross was portrayed early in Church History, Why it becomes a problem, and Where are we at today. We also hint at where we might be going. This issue is a microcosm of false assumptions and getting off track at large.
