GuestThank you DB, Fitting with the purposes of this site, it would seem that one possible way to reconcile it all is to take the view of LDS historians such as Leonard Arrington, Richard Bushman, and Michael Quinn.
Their perspectives seem to fit a general model of “Something powerful happened and it was difficult for the participants to fully describe it. New and important truths were born from these experiences.”
I can see how that view could be quite helpful and ultimately sustainable. Something did happen. Truth did spring forth. Sure the truth was mixed with error, false assumptions, personalities, and environmental factors but that is just part of being human.
Worth considering anyway.

Ryan is asking the questions today and he leads the conversation like a master interviewer. We discuss my frustration and why I in part blame the church. We talk about how we as people can do better and how the church can improve. Your feedback is always welcome and we hope to hear from you. Buckle your sea belts, sit back…. and enjoy the ride!

Guest159: Handshakes and Drawn Swords – PART IIhttp://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/09/159-handshakes-and-drawn-swords-ii/ ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/09/159-handshakes-and-drawn-swords-ii/ Today we revisit our episode from a short time ago, “Handshakes and Drawn Swords”. We talk about the discussion that has ensued and rebuttals apologists have made that has come about because of it. While apologists argue this perspective is absurd, I argue that it still has a seat at the table.

Taylor. Brother Taylor continued polygamy after the 1890 manifesto and even after the 1904 second manifesto and today we talk about his trial searching for insights into this episode in Church history of “Curious Workmanship”

Guest164: Seer Stones, Folk Magic, and Alvin’s Hand
http://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/http://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/” class=”bbcode_url”> With The Church releasing photos of the Seer Stone it seems to beg the question what really is at the root of our discomfort with this narrative. For me the answer is obvious….. Treasure Digging and Folk Magic and the depth of the details of how all the characters involved are just that……. involved.
We hit on the Chase family, magic circles, guardian spirits, throat slit Spaniards, Obadiah Dogberry, and Alvin’s Hand. This one was fun and I hope you find it fun too.

GuestThat was a fascinating podcast DB! I loved how you brought in all those sources to make a somewhat coherent picture of Joseph’s early involvement with folk magic and how that intertwines heavily with his role as prophet, revelator, and most especially as Seer. Just listened, DB. Thank you so much for doing this interview! He has great insights and a good way of communicating them.
I don’t usually say things like this, but if anybody reading can drop what they’re doing for an hour, I’d love to hear your thoughts. You could add them to the thread a couple weeks back, “T.W. McConkie’s ‘gamechanging’ book…” For the curious – I know I was – his great-uncle is Bruce R. and Joseph Wirthlin was his grandfather. He left the church as a teenager and is in his mid-30’s now.

Guest2 part series– I think these are both really good though part 2 is by far the best in my mind
Emotional Gut Punchhttp://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/11/emotional-gut-punch/ ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/11/emotional-gut-punch/ part 1 I talk about my emotional angst with the last weeks fiasco
– Today Chris Bloxham sits down to discuss the emotioal roller coaster ride that the last 7 days have been. How leading with faith is getting near impossible and Cynicism abounds. I don’t have all the answers today and and I no longer know where all this leads but I have always tried to be authentic and so welcome to my world. This is part 1 of a 2 part series. In Part 2 we invite a listener to join us and take a analytical look at the problems with this handbook fiasco.

Handbooks, Policies, and Sleight of Handhttp://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/11/handbooks-policies-and-slight-of-hand/ ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/11/handbooks-policies-and-slight-of-hand/ part two we have a panel discussion about the timeline of events and my belief that the brethren were deceptive.
– Today Chris Bloxham returns to talk to me and one of my listeners Clay as we take this policy change apart every step of the way. This may be one of the best episodes yet on Mormon Discussion as we try to make sense of this public relations nightmare.

What does it mean that the Church is true, that the Book of Mormon is true, what is scripture, and what is the role of a prophet. Today we sit down with LDS scholar and author Richard Bushman and get his take. I think you will find this interview to tackle new ground and offer groundwork along the nuanced path. Follow along as Richard shows us a life that “leads with Faith”
