John Montgomery is a faithful LDS who encountered ridicule and persecution as a teenager and young adult causing him to spend some time out of the Church. He tells his spending time in other churches, encounter with Hugh Nibley and FARMS, defending his faith, and his return to church with a greater appreciation for Faith.

I know I seem to come to my listeners often asking for financial backing. I wanted to make you aware of a need. First I have received about $522.00 from Listeners…. How awesome is that… you guys are so great.

I have purchased a laptop which has allowed to me work on the podcast and publish shows and edit them from work. This has been a blessing. It was $349.00 and I paid for about a third of it the podcast donations paid the rest

I recently purchased a higher quality Mic and POP filter which you should hear in the next episode. It was also used in the beginning of the Anthon Episode. This was paid for by our Sponsor COSTA RICA TRAVELPASS (costaricatravelpass.com)…. they get a big thumbs up!!!

I have also purchased a couple of books on ebay that instructed how to use Audacity and running a podcast…

I want you to know every dollar goes towards the podcast and your support is so appreciated by me.

I have been asked by FAIR (FAIRLDS.ORG)to join a panel discussion in Utah to share the point of view of those in Crisis and my personal view. Unfortunately this is above and beyond what I can do. If anyone who listens to the podcast sees worth in this and would want to support this trip. Please email me at reelmormon@gmail.com. I DO NOT want a paypal donation because if I can not raise the total amount I need I do not want you to have donated a partial amount if I can get the rest of it. I am hopeful the panel discussion would be an episode if I am able to be there.

the conference will take place on August 1 & 2 at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo. It appears the costs would be in the neighborhood of $900.00

Airfare – round trip $600.00 if I am reading computer screen right

I also would need a place to stay.

rental Car – or transportation to and from conference.

I am hopeful 900 would cover all I need.

If not no biggie but if anyone has the desire to do part or all of this let me know by email

    CHRIS REEVE INTERVIEW

    March 25th, 2013

Parts 1&2 of my interview with Chris Reeve. Chris is a friend of mine who used to live in my ward and served with me in Leadership Callings. I always appreciated his intellect and way of seeing things from a different vantage point then me. We discuss his faith, inoculation against troublesome material, and how spiritual experiences have rooted him in his sure foundation of faith.

Newest Episode – Prophets and Apostles

    http://mormondiscussion.podbean.com/” class=”bbcode_url”>http://mormondiscussion.podbean.com/

With General Conference coming up, this episode explores what Prophets and Apostles are, why it appears the prophets and apostles today are different from those of the old world, why they are different from even Joseph Smith of this dispensation, and what we are to make of it. I conclude asking if revelation still occurs today and asking that we have faith that it does.

Your prophets and apostles podcast was excellent. I guess that’s supposed to be a part of having faith when decides to have spiritual manifestations less dramatic in these last days.

Listened to the podcast. I have to say I like the general premise that kind of downplays expectation of prophets being people constantly in communication with God, and how dramatic revelation is not a common occurrence. However, I have to admit I kind of felt like your argument had an apologetic feel to it. You make the assumption that God only does the fantastical things when he starts doing a great work. Can I play devils advocate for a minute? What if I wanted to challenge the existing church or religious atmosphere? I couldn’t do it by subtle, more of the same, means. I’d have to do something flashy to call attention, something miraculous. So it would make sense that I would claim great experiences that make me special, that give my voice meaning, that give people reason to follow me. While it could be that God understands this and so does as you suggest (and to some degree the scriptures if you take them literal), it could also be that people make up these claims themselves to play on the emotions of people. There’s certainly ample evidence of this type of thing in the day’s of Joseph Smith (People claiming to be “prophets” and having great spiritual experiences). It would also explain why later followers/leaders don’t share the same experiences. They don’t need to. They are sustained on the stories in the same way we are sustained by the stories in the scriptures. A scripture comes to mind in Moroni 7:

    Quote:

35 And now, my beloved brethren, if this be the case that these things are true which I have spoken unto you, and God will show unto you, with power and great glory at the last day, that they are true, and if they are true has the day of miracles ceased?

36 Or have angels ceased to appear unto the children of men? Or has he withheld the power of the Holy Ghost from them? Or will he, so long as time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man upon the face thereof to be saved?

37 Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain.

I’m in no way trying to say that JS and others don’t have these great experiences. But my feeling is the current leadership of the church consists more of bureaucratic leaders than “spiritual giants” (those with exceptional spiritual experiences). I used to believe they were special witnesses because they walked and talked with Christ. But I no longer believe so. I think the idea that spiritual experiences are too sacred to be shared is hogwash. If there’s one constant in the scriptures it’s that prophets shared their spiritual experiences often. The fact that our leaders do not share them suggests they don’t have them. So do we as a church lack the faith necessary? Do we really want to make the claim it’s simply not needed anymore? Because that’s the claim those “other Christians” make.

Of course, you also hear the occasional member who has and is willing to share their miraculous experiences. However, it is generally taught that these experiences are sacred and so should be kept to yourself rather than sharing. I can’t help but wonder if this teaching (too sacred to share) came about as a way to prevent the undermining of authority of those in leadership positions? What would it look like if the average Mormon was sharing visions and angelic visitations while the 12 did not?

Anyways, done with my rant. While I sustain the leadership of the church, I do so with the understanding that it’s their job to run the church on earth. I will defer to them when it comes to rules in the church insomuch as I don’t have conflicting inspiration. I honestly believe they are great people seeking to do God’s will. Thanks for taking the time to do this (and others) podcast!

Eman, I read the excellent book The Second Comforter by Denver Snuffer and it appears to me he believes the same as what you suggested with people not sharing these dramatic experiences as often anymore is because it undermine the prophet and apostles authority. In my opinion, it could also be too many people lack now in our materialistic society.

I also think we have to separate Old Testament Prophets from New Testament Apostles. Then we have to look at their body of work.

So taking OT out and also Throwing the Savior’s spiritual experiences out as is an exception. What Do we have

We have Peter struggling to change his mind/cultural position on whether the gentiles should receive the gospel? that remind you of anything (1978 revelation, Women Priesthood) I mean if one really knows his stuff he know Peter was chastened about this decision by Paul and others and it took him three revelations I believe the last of which happening while he slept on a roof. Talk about hard to get the point across

We have Peter being let out of Prison, We have Paul’s conversion, what else do we have? Stephen seeing Christ while being stoned (Elder McConkie’s last testimony in terms of testimony not persecution)

It seems reasonable to me to recognize that New Testament apostles seem left much more to their own and their ability to council together then Old Testament Prophets who acted alone and got more direct Spiritual experiences.

I think the biggest issue, is that the church should have strongly emphasized apostles and down played comparing the Prophet to Moses, Isaiah, and Abraham

    ex: http://www.lds.org/topics/prophets?lang=eng” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.lds.org/topics/prophets?lang=eng

    Quote:

inspired men called to speak for the Lord, as did Moses, Isaiah, Peter, Paul, Nephi, Mormon, and other prophets of the scriptures. We sustain the President of the Church as prophet, seer, and revelator

Had they Downplayed comparing the prophet to those prior to Christ they could have easily delineated easily between Nephi and Moses on one side and President Monson and Peter on the other

It would have allowed more flexibility which I still say is there and we simply as a church have mis-assigned the role of prophet in much the same way as Joseph mis-assigned the hill Cumorah as the Hill in New York.

An interesting thing about this idea is that it sounds like David O. McKay was the first Church President to be called “the Prophet” since Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and for many generations in the Church “the Prophet” generally meant Joseph Smith rather than the current Church President. But at some point they really started pushing the idea of living prophets as if any time we have had the true gospel on the earth there had to be a prophet entitled to special revelations to keep the Church on track. Even though I believe in revelation and inspiration I don’t believe that it was ever quite like many people think about with the stories of Moses, Jeremiah, Daniel, and other prophets.

To me interpreting the Bible and especially the Old Testament as largely a combination of hearsay, myths, legends, and purely human opinions to go along with whatever true history and revelations it possibly contains is actually much less problematic and damaging to faith over the long run than trying to insist all this was the inspired word of God because in that case you end up with major conflicts with scientific and historical evidence, God supposedly ordering genocide, etc. This is also one reason why I think the Church should tone it down with the prophet hype in their official publications and talks because that would allow the scriptures and Church leaders more flexibility to not have to be more than they really are instead of directly forcing so many people to feel like they have to choose between all these ideas inherited from past generations that don’t make sense anymore and what they can clearly see and understand for themselves.

While I agree that if they had “toned it down” it would have made a big difference in how we perceive our leaders, I can’t help but wonder about the effect it would have had in church culture…If we as a church generally accepted that they weren’t prophets like Moses but rather imperfect leaders like peter, would we follow as easily what they say? Or would we second guess everything they tell us to do, recognizing that it was more likely their opinion (though well thought out, i’m sure) than pure revelation. I don’t want to beat a dead horse but would we accept something as silly as the WoW prohibitions concerning tea when research points to the many health benefits there of (in moderation)? So while personally I wish we viewed them as they are, I can’t help but see why someone at some point may have lifted them up on a rameumptom, er, pedestal. Overall I think it is probably more benifical for stage 3 rank and file members. Gives them more confidence in the church and what they are doing. Granted it also removes the need to reason things out for yourself. Sigh…glad I’m just a normal person not weighed down with the tough decisions… :)
