I am afraid that my faith crisis is negatively affecting my children during their formative years.
Shawn – as a mom, I can tell you that many of us parents have things we aren’t great at. My parents were devoted to the church, but my mom has a temper that could part the sea, we weren’t abused, but bad tempers make life rocky. At the same time she gave us hours of support, friendship and instruction. Today I choose to hold on to the parts I liked, and work to forgive the parts that didn’t.
In my adult years I have met member and non-member parents who were better parents at one stage than another. Some are great parents of babies, toddlers – but the moment teenage-hood arrives its scary. The reverse also happens. Lousy with young ones, but give them a teen or pre-teen and things go well.
Think of all the Young Adult and Adult converts. Many of them didn’t have a religion or changed religion. When they are older they will make their lives, what they can.
You gave them life. You’ve done good.
