GuestAfter reading over my husbands shoulder for 6 months. I decided it was time for me to join up. I am a BIC mormon from an active LDS family, but unlike cwald’s family, most of my family would be considered NOM’s compared to his.
My paternal grandfather had a highly scientific mind and left the church while my father was on his mission. In hindsight, I think when my father realized my aptitude and interest in the sciences he made an effort to inoculate me against the inevitable crisis of faith he suspected was coming. That crisis came during my senior year in high school. I was very upset that everyone in my ward could know all sorts of things “beyond a shadow of a doubt” while I struggled to even “know” if there was a God. At the time it made me feel like they were either all lying to each other or that I was so much more unworthy than the rest of them. I struggled for a few years in college but with the help of some friends who were working through similar struggles and a very “unorthodox” institute teacher, I realized everything didn’t have to be black and white. It stopped bothering me that my testimony was more an affirmation of belief than a declaration of fact.

GuestSo nice to meet you. I’ve really enjoyed cwald’s take on things and can’t wait to hear your perspective. You seem to be very at peace with where you are. My father has a scientific mind but has gone the apologetics route. He is very supportive of my faith-crisis and is very accepting of my questioning but his apologetics can be maddening at times. 🙄 Welcome to the best ward on the planet!!!!December 6, 2010 at 3:02 am #237411Anonymous
GuestSheesh. Here all this time I was thinking “Poor cwald. Nobody understands him.” Phooey with that. Anyway, welcome jwald! I have to say that I am just a bit envious that mrs. doug is not on here with me.

Wow, I like that phrasing – very, very much.Just one question:
Is your husband’s picture a photograph or an avatar?

GuestYeah… Its so nice to meet cwald’s better (and definitely better looking) half! It seems like you are in a pretty good place spiritually, and I think you may be able to help a few of us here. I look forward to more posts from you. I like you already! December 6, 2010 at 9:48 pm #237417Anonymous

Well said. When we look at testimonies this way, then when others say, “I know the church is true” (or this past Sunday when I heard, “I know Jesus is true” …
I’m not sure what that is supposed to mean?) … I can take those comments for what they are…affirmations of belief, not declarations of facts. Right?
Glad you joined the conversations. I look forward to learning from you.

GuestI love your avatar Mrs. Cwald! Nice to meet a spouse here, as well. And, since I’m on things that impress me, I like this quote:
Quote:“my testimony was more an affirmation of belief than a declaration of fact”
I see this as the way I will interpret TR questions, as well as testimonies over the pulpit — should reduce the angst even further.
Thanks — hope to hear more from you! What is your avatar anyway? What engaging eyes it has!
