I tried to get our SS Presidency to step up, and they had no interest. My question is what homework did the Bishopric do to make sure they had the right person in the the SS President position? He’s a placeholder, and frankly, and obstacle to progress now. It’s evidence of the conscription model, or lack of thought in progress…
It all depends on what the church (specifically the local leaders in this case) is trying to accomplish. For instance, is their focus smoothly running programs or is it giving someone a responsibility so they feel included in the community?
Would a BP rather have someone reject a calling that they aren’t interested in or accept the calling and do a halfhearted job with the idea that anything they can get out of that person is better than the nothing they’d get if they rejected the calling.
It will depend on the person, the circumstances, the goals, and the urgency.
I get it — it’s not all about progress all the time — sometime it’s about growth. It surprises me, though, that the SS isn’t given more priority for the solid people like Bpric, PH leadership. RS, YM, YW — done properly, the SS Pres can have a big impact on the quality of the Sunday experience.
I am ready to settle back into doing everything I think it is important now, and not relying on anyone who isn’t into it….I’ll be cooperative if the guy wants something, but I expect he’ll be hands off as he doesn’t see much value in the Teachers Council concept.
I know that when I push people beyond what they want to do, I get pushback and that creates problems. Learned that years and years ago…

GuestLocal leadership roulette applies to lots of things – and even to excellent leaders in areas they don’t prioritize. Our ward leadership actively encourages the teacher training class, and we get dozens of attendees each month. Otoh, our recent Bishop was a wonderful man who cared deeply about the youth – but he alienated a few who were unorthodox in some way.
People are people, so leadership roulette is a thing.
