GuestAs the impact and effect of faith transition entered my life I ached for friends who would understand. Don’t we all. This crisis has taught me much about community. Anyway – I have a vivid imagination. Using that tool I made church easier for myself by mentally inviting kindred spirits to my bench. No one else could see them, but I could. We could squeeze hands of support when things hurt. We could shed tears when emotions were touched in our sorest spots. Best of all we could sing, worship, roll our eyes and move forward together. My very first bench buddy was Lavina Anderson. I had never heard of the September 6 until this crisis. But one Sunday we were singing a hymn written by her husband. In that moment I grabbed her and made her my bench buddy. My bench is very full now. We easily take up a full side of the chapel – many of you are part of it. Today the Salt Lake Tribune interviewed Lavina.
I bring you My First Bench Buddy – Lavina

GuestThanks for sharing this. What an amazing woman. I am struck that what she did doesn’t seem to be an excommunication offence. Perhaps there are no hard and fast rules about excommunication and what will get you exed in certain circumstances and political climates will not get you exed in others.
It also makes me wonder what it would take for her to be rebaptized. Maybe her still being exed gives her freedom to comment on the current goings on (something that she might want to avoid if she were rebaptized and trying to keep a low profile).
costs and benefits….

GuestMom3, this is beautiful! I went through a period where Jesus was my bench buddy. I envisioned him sitting right next to me and that was the only way I made it through during that difficult time. I knew that He knew the situation perfectly. June 19, 2014 at 6:48 am #286553Anonymous
GuestAfterall – I like your bench buddy. Sincerely. I did have to laugh at myself, one of my lifetime desires to bring Christ into our church more, and yet my church buddy bench hasn’t had a seat for him. I am amending that right now. Thanks.
