I’m getting a third chance to get the High Councilor thing right.

I am happy about this. The stake focus is on more personal ministry, better teaching and broadening youth experiences. Also, this gives me a chance to speak in church on a regular basis, which I love to do.

Congrats. Your reasons are exactly why I like being a high councilor. Enjoy. FWIW, our SP tells us frequently that our talks should, no matter what the subject, focus on the Savior (which of necessity does sometimes limit the subject). I was gratified today to hear our bishop say the same thing in his testimony, although he did preface it with “yesterday in our bishops council, Pres. XXX said…and this rang true to me.”

Moving water down the rows. Nice. You will do well. And we promise to not let things get out of hand here. You can only shepherd so much of the flock at one time. Happy for you, and for your stake.

When I was talking with the counselor, he asked me what I have done previously when I was a High Councilor. I told him the responsibilities I had been given, and I also told him about what I do here. I didn’t tell him the site name, but I did tell him it is a site I don’t want most members to visit and why. I talked about people venting in pain and frustration and how our central theme is respect of everyone no matter how they build their own faith paradigms. I told him Elder Wirthlin’s orchestra analogy and how we encourage people to find their own instruments, no matter what they are. I likened it to triage in many cases and said I don’t want people who don’t need emergency care to be exposed to the possibility of getting cut or hurt unnecessarily.

He told me he understood what I meant and that it he knows there a lot of members who need the type of attention and acceptance I described.

    It was a good meeting.

My brother, who is in the bishopric and always straight TBM never drinks caffeine soda etc etc etc, happened to email me yesterday with a blog post about members who struggle, and how bishops should better coach the members on the temple recommend questions, very similar to discussions we’ve had here.

My point, anyway, is that I don’t think there is a stake out there that doesn’t know there is a need for this. It just took about 7 years too long for people to recognize it and not fear it.

It sounds like you presented it well so they understood where you’re at.

    The roller coaster continues.

I love the university where I have been working for the past year, but I have had the boss from Hell in many ways. Young, inexperienced, insecure (but hiding it), smart enough to think he knows what he doesn’t know, unable to value input, critical of others, a yes man to the President (who is an impatient visionary), a belief that whatever they want done is God’s will, etc. Things came to a head recently, due to completely unrealistic goals, and I am looking for another job again.

I am in the final interview stage for a position about 100 miles from where we live – a small promotion organizationally that would put me in a position of recruiting directly against where I have been employed. I should know by the end of this week if I will offered that position. If so, I will get a small apartment there and commute home a couple of times each week, including most weekends.

Either way, my participation time probably will take a downturn again, as I dive into a new job. Just wanted to let you all know.

Ray, I hope you find some good change that fits you and your skills. Sometimes changes are good.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I noticed that you had something about “searching” on your LinkedIn profile. I hope it works out for the best.

I was one of two finalists, and I think, based on some input from a friend who was contacted for a reference, that the administration is split: the VP who would direct supervisor liking the other person more and the President liking me more. It has been almost three weeks since the interview without any input. It is excruciating – and will be a bit difficult anyway if the Pres. over-rules the VP.

I am applying for other positions, as well.

I am interviewing for a position in eastern Kentucky on Monday and will be driving to minimize the cost, since I have to pay to get there and will be reimbursed afterward. They are interviewing only two candidates, and the HR Director (who chairs the search committee) has told me I am their top choice.

If I get the offer, I might start as early as the beginning of November.

I will try to check in each night, but I might not be able to do so regularly for a while, since our daughter is going through the temple next weekend, and we are driving to Utah for that, as well. She is 21 and she is not going on a mission or getting married. She wants to do it and is our most orthodox child.

I will end up driving almost 5,000 miles in eleven days (six days of solid, all-day driving), so my time will be somewhat limited. :P

Thoughts with are with you and your family, including your daughter Ray. You’re a good father. God bless you and your family.

I made it: 22 hours driving in two days.

    Sometimes, I impress myself. :P

I may have you beat. From the west coast to the east coast, 42 consecutive hours, only stopping to eat and refuel. We did split the driving between two people, I probably only did 2/3rds. Still, that one took a physical toll. It’s amazing what you can do when you’re young and poor.

    How did the interview go?

You need satellite radio to distract on those long hauls.

    sheesh.

If you get the job…are you going to be moving this year?

    The interview went well.

I should know whether I get the offer or not next week. The other candidate is on campus today.
