GuestWell, my Bishop contacted me a while ago. I think he was frustrated that he can’t give us callings since we don’t live in the Ward, and our employment situation is “in limbo”. He sort of implied he didn’t like me being a benchwarmer, and that I should “volunteer as much as possible”. I was asked to be a primary pianist on an assignment basis, but I refused that one as I had no passion for it, and it seemed like a grind. I accepted an assignment to help with a major ward activity — very well done last time I saw it last year. I attended a committee meeting today. I’m glad I agreed to help with this event…and am now organizing a number of components, such as an indoor nerf archery event, and a fun zone during dinner with table tennis, face painting, a lego building spot, and a photo booth. I’ll be correlating with the High Priests, and raising various resources, and day-of-event execution.
I’m also glad I did it because I saw how a very effective leader in the Ward managed the meeting –the primary president. I love to watch the leadership styles of effective people. She used a funnel approach where she got everyone to give ideas, and then gradually narrowed it down to a few key features that included many of the best ideas.
And then, based on the ideas people brought to the table, made assignments. She handled booby prize ideas very well, and tactfully. I intend to integrate some of her techniques into my own style. She also gave the dud ideas air time, exploring them, discussing why she was concerned about then, and letting people respond to the concerns. I don’t think anyone felt their ideas weren’t given serious consideration.
All very skillful on her part, and very enjoyable for me. So, I can serve with passion and interest on this project — serving my own interests and the interests of the church at the same time.
Just want to share how saying “no” to a calling/assignment (Primary Pianist) paid off, and how following my own interests and passions is helping me achieve the “object and design of our existence” — happiness. In spite of the disaffection I feel in so many areas, this represents a bright spot.
Thought I’d share that it’s possible to have some kind of fulfilment in the church without necessarily being TBM….

GuestThanks for sharing SD. It sounds like it has been a positive experience in many ways.  I agree, the church does have something to offer even those of us who are less orthodox.October 3, 2014 at 5:57 pm #290126Anonymous

GuestI also appreciate you sharing this story. I had a similar experience. Last year my wife and I were asked to help with a large stake activity (a dinner for the seniors in the stake). It was really hard for both of us to be involved since we have such young kids, but I enjoyed helping out and making some people happy. October 5, 2014 at 5:48 am #290128Anonymous
GuestSD, I sounds like a really good fit for you right now and I appreciate that you gave props to the PP as I think that the PP is usually not given her due. I know you are also very interested in differnet management styles and how to handle volunteers. I glad you had a good experience. -
