This past Sunday as I was sitting in church for some reason the division of families when the father is called to sit on the stand really struck me. A sort of vision opened up for me and I imagined the steps to the stand placed right next to the pulpit. There were also a few less seats up there – only for the choir – and an announcement was made that because we value families so much those who were conducting and presiding would have the opportunity to sit with their families immediately below the pulpit.

An incredible warm feeling ran over me and I knew the Lord was inspiring changes.

    . . .

Of course we know there are balls thrown and balls caught, just because our leaders may miss a pitch here and there… well, we support them anyway.

I should also say that while my “vision” may be real inspiration for one particular situation, it may not be the best solution for the church as a whole.

I think Orson makes a great point. Strategies that work to help people navigate their own path in the church don’t necessarily change the church to a better place. Maybe the people you touch daily, but beyond that, probably no impact at all. Change at the organization level is so slow.

Anyway, I’m thrilled to have another strong female voice here, so welcome again!

during times of reflection I have thought of the role of women in the church and how men in leadership positions have an elevated social status within the church culture. here are a few thoughts i would like to share:

    – looking through the Ensign conference issue i saw all these men pictured (GA’s, apostles, Seventies) and i thought “why don’t they do this with the women leaders every conference issue too” ? (general primary presidency, general relief society presidency, etc.). i haven’t looked through a conference issue in a while so maybe they already do this.

    – from time to time i use to think “why do we have to call leaders by their official title ?” When you want to talk to a Bishop at church you say “Bishop So-N-So. How are you doing ? …. blah blah blah”. My feel is the Bishop has a lot of status in a congregation. He is “above” everyone. Anyway, that’s just my feeling. It’s a feeling of inequality that i don’t like. He’s just like you and me and he is an equal (he’s human, i’m human). Why not call all leaders “Brother this-or-that” or by their first name. This formality naturally puts leaders on a pedestal. It’s the same with GA’s who come visit. This having to stand when a GA walks into church ? Come on !! Let’s be equals here in Christ !

BLC, I always cringe when I hear people say, “Congratulations on your new calling.”

In reality, the leadership positions the women hold are just as important as any priesthood calling. RS, YW, Primary, etc etc. But I think you are right, that the Bishop or SP are viewed as “more important” than the rest. It makes me sad.

    Hi, TSW –

I’m reading through introductions and hope I can ask a follow-up question. How are things going with your children and with temple attendance? You asked how you could square your doubts and disagreement with wanting to be with them. I wondered if the passage of time has yielded an answer.

    Thanks.
