You know that question about what would Jesus say if he were standing beside you? Well, the thing is, I think there’s a huge difference between what most people asking that question would say Jesus would say and what Jesus would actually say. Jesus hated people who followed all the rules but had no charity. He hated hypocrites and constantly questioned the authority of the Jewish (his) religious leaders & undermined their authority. I suspect that Jesus would mostly say “Chill out. Quit focusing so much on what other people think, and get comfortable living the actual gospel: charity, love for self and others, all that crap.”

Along these lines there’s a voice in my head when these things come up that keeps telling me: “YOU matter.” I have to think that’s from God.

Also, I have often had the accompanying thought about those nattering judgmental Mormons: “You are not the boss of me.” For sure that’s got to be the Holy Ghost.

I do not wear garments all the time. I wear them about half the time. I sometimes wear bottoms without tops. I wear them when it makes sense for me to wear them.

I have changed the quote above by one word … and that makes all the difference.

Yes, thank you. Even when I proof read I leave words out.

Now that I think about it he did say if you can, as in if circumstances allow then you should. Symantics. :ugeek:

I don’t know where I stand in wearing garments. I do wear them sometimes at night and mostly during the day.

However, on Sunday I did not wear the top because my perfectly modest outfit would still have much angst with sorting out not showing the garment. Part of it is a sizing issue – I am not wearing the correct size for me. Part of it is a body issue – my body is not the correct size in a variety of places for garments.

The other question I am starting to ask is “would wearing my garments in this situation be de-sanctifying towards them?” Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

If he said, “if you think you can wear the garments at the time then you should” then that seems like the same thing as “Wear the garments, unless you can’t.”

Honestly, I can think of precious few circumstances where I literally could not be physically able to wear the garment. I do not think that he would mean to literally do it whenever humanly possible – that is just weird and extreme. He probably means to do what everyone else does – IOW to wear it except for swimming, sports, sex, and perhaps a visit to the Dr.

By changing the word “can” to “should”, I am suggesting that you take some personal ownership of your garment wearing habits. What do they mean to you? Why do you wear them? How do they affect your relationship with God? Are there situations where it would be more appropriate to wear them than others? What might it mean for you to “defile” your garments? What practices might help the wearing of the garment to be more symbolic and meaningful to you?

    I’d say…

Part of it is a garment design issue – garments are not the correct size in a variety of places for my body.
