My dad used to say this a lot. It was something like even if you belonged to the church of the devil, if you were doing what you truly believe is right then you would be saved

I have butchered it horribly…anyone have a clue on source?

Wow, not heard of that one before.

Brigham Young has so much to his name I wouldn’t be surprised at much these days.

I’m aware of a few quotes stating that we believe in all truth, even if it comes from Hell, including this one:

    Quote:

I want to say to my friends that we believe in all good. If you can find a truth in heaven, earth or hell, it belongs to our doctrine. We believe it; it is ours; we claim it.

I’m not aware of any quote indicating that sincerity earns salvation even if you’re in the church of the devil.

I will look for the quote, but I believe it.

Our temple theology and Second Article of Faith basically say that sincerity is far more important than specific religious affiliation.

Old Brigham is a bit of a rent-a-quote. He can be used to support most positions.

I see his tenure as ‘moses in the desert’ army general type presidency to get the pioneers into Utah and keep them all alive for the first decade or so. I struggle with him as a prophet, seer etc. I think he did too.

That is my view of him, as well, mackay11.

No, the anti- crowd doesn’t love Brigham. They love the caricature of him that his difficult and bad quotes paint.

Frankly, many members don’t love Brigham, either. They also love their caricature of him.

He was a very complex person, and he had as many wonderful quotes as difficult ones.
