GuestThere have been many recent requests to create account where the person simply copy-pasted the justification prompt as their stated reason for wanting to join StayLDS. Maybe you’ve seen them. I’ve kicked around the idea of doing something so that requests like that get auto-denied, meaning we never see them.
I was on the fence because the concern is that would only prompt the bots/spammers to get more clever. Meaning right now I can easily recognize and delete the user request because it’s pretty obvious that it’s a bot/spammer.
If I try the auto-denied route that might prompt the bot/spammer to get more clever, meaning they’d find some other less obvious method to try to get their account activated.
As it stands right now, they get through the first filter but are failing pretty hard on getting approved by one of us. If I improve the first filter, they might find a way to get through that would make it harder on us to know whether to approve.
Thoughts?

GuestI have seen those requests, and you’re right they are no brainers and I just delete the accounts. I guess if you set up a filter and the bots become more clever, how clever can they get? It’s not like they can copy someone else’s justification and it’s unlikely it would come up with credible actual justifications (or is it?). I say it’s worth a try.

GuestI guess they can be more creative if need be. Today’s deleted user justification:
Quote:Activation Justification: Game development involves the creation of interactive entertainment software, ranging from simple mobile games to complex AAA titles for consoles and PCs. It’s a multidisciplinary field that requires collaboration between various professionals, including
Still a no brainer.

GuestI’ve been seeing a lot of bogus account requests lately. I tried a low hanging fruit approach. I changed the question asked when registering from:
LDS Church headquarters is located in ____ Lake City, Utah (enter the missing word).
to:
LDS Church headquarters is located in Salt ____ City, Utah (enter the missing word).
And of course changed the word they have to type in from Salt to Lake. I don’t know whether that will slow them down but it was an easier thing to try than what I was suggesting in the original post.

GuestThank you for your efforts Nibbler. January 11, 2025 at 4:03 pm #345368Anonymous
GuestI changed it again. Totally different question now. The current president of the church is Russell M ____ (enter the missing word).
Hopefully a google search will slow some of them down.
I’m seeing at least a half dozen spammers try to create an account per day. I don’t really have a way to do the auto deny.
I guess I’m thankful that they put in no effort to come up with better justification text. It’s just an annoyance to have to delete so many bogus users.

GuestThe bots and spammers are winning. I’m getting more and more bogus account requests. I must have deleted a dozen today. I think the strategy is going to be to let the account creation requests queue up and do a mass deletion once a week or so. It’s too hard to stay on top of.
