GuestI haven’t had a real calling in a couple years now, part of it is my work schedule, they tried calling me into scouts but I wouldn’t be able to make most week day activities. I am also not seen as someone that would be as effective a teacher, especially to young people, as many other members. My wife has been in primary and I have filled in a few times but I just can’t get to the kid level as easily as others. I don’t get asked to speak much I think because it’s easy to see I’m not real comfortable with public speaking, and I may not deliver the type of message they are looking for. My last talk was supposed to be on something like receiving answers to prayer or direction from the spirit, I was asked to give personal examples and I ended up talking a lot from the BY quote and similar recent GC talks that we receive strength in finding our own way without being directed in all things etc. …I think that may keep me off the hook for a while, lol. Many ward members loved it but I don’t think it was what they were looking for. Anyway, I am now (or will be next week) “official” again, with a calling as an assistant ward clerk. Now I’ll have a simple answer to the “what is your calling?” question.

GuestI enjoyed my time as a clerk. I also know a man who was an assistant ward clerk for about 12 years. I moved from the ward four years ago, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he still is in that position. He loved it, since it gave him an easy out if a particular lesson got to be too much to handle. He would slip out and do “clerk stuff” for the remainder of the class time. I hope you enjoy this calling.

GuestThanks guys. I had the same calling over 10 years ago and enjoyed it, I’ve been waiting for it to come back around. March 20, 2013 at 3:43 pm #266654Anonymous
GuestI think my present ward is often better than most, at least as far as I have experienced – but obviously at times still falls short. This past GD lesson had a positive point, someone quoted: “It is better to be good than to be right” but the rest of the lesson was difficult.
There was a picture of Emma on the board, and the teacher touched on the challenges in Joseph & Emma’s relationship. It was noted that being married to Joseph Smith was not easy. One comment was “Emma had to share Joseph with the Lord”
That was immediately followed by “she had to share him with the Church!”
I couldn’t say “what about the other wives?” because my wife would have slugged me and she would have been embarrassed.
I just hope I wasn’t the only one in that room thinking that thought.
After church I asked my wife if she thought others in the room thought that, she thought some probably did but many probably had no idea. I asked “shouldn’t this be common knowledge?” I didn’t get an answer..
It appears we differ on that point. I get the feeling she honestly wishes all the difficulties will disappear — while I firmly believe in inoculation.
Someday soon I need to talk with her about my need to have these conversations with our growing children.
