My snarky comment for the day: the announcement that RMN has 116 grandchildren sounds positively polygamy-ish. That is so many kids, how can he possibly remember all their names?
All the boys are named Russell, Marion, or Jared and all the girls are named You.
Alternatively: He’s the prophet, and you can’t contradict the prophet. Your name is whatever he calls you.
C’mere Billy.

Billy, I said come here.
[whispered]
[/whispered]Go on son, your name is Billy now.
Thanks – this make me laugh!

GuestI believe this new FP is basically the start of the Oaks administration. I actually see good wisdom here…RMN is 93. God will keep him capable of leading for as long as needed. But as we saw with Hinckley and Monson, they were mostly running things well before their call as President when Benson and Hunter were limited in function.
There can be some consistency knowing Oaks is helping the 1st Pres now, and will likely continue soon-ish.
If RMN were to pass in the next 2 years, it would seem more a seamless transition to Oaks because he is already helping as 1st Couns, and he may be handling many duties now, depending on Nelson’s health. Nelson may not have time to leave much of his own mark, so basically, Oaks is starting his legacy now, it seems to me.

GuestNibbler – Another win for you. Billy. I can’t stop laughing. Heber – you have a good point. It is so possible. Poor Eyring, he’s just window dressing now.

In fact, there is a certain way of looking at all this… the simplest way… that removes the concept that DFU was kicked over being too nice or that the Church is getting back to hard-line thinking or that we wanted to get back to white male Americans. Really the simplest explanation is that RMN put DOH in as 1st Counselor because he likely will be President in a few years. To make room, the prior 1st Counselor was moved to 2nd. The prior 2nd was moved back into the Quorum. Personally, I imagine there is more to it than that, but that simple explanation is a bit hard to ignore if we don’t let our imaginations take us too far.January 19, 2018 at 8:04 pm #326308Anonymous
GuestThere’s also the deacon’s quorum president theory. RMN put his best buds in as his counselors. January 19, 2018 at 8:33 pm #326309Anonymous

“I have a good feeling about making my best buds my counselors. It must be the Spirit!” All of the problems I have with the Church can be boiled down to this.

When so much emphasis is placed on the spirit guiding and directing the church and leaders and even personally to find truth….this is kind of a scary thing. How to rely on the spirit for things…what is the spirit and not.
It’s kind of problematic for me too. I have to try to think of what I can trust is reliable, and what I really need to have something more than just “a feeling” about something important to do it. IDK. There doesn’t seem to be blanket rules for everything. It’s troubling.

There is some truth in this but it is not always the case.

GuestFwiw, I see it exactly like OON described: giving Elder Oaks some President-in-Training time and shifting the others down the line. I don’t think Nelson and Uchtdorf are best buds, but I really do think it was a move to put Elder Oaks in as second-in-command, visually, since he already was second-in-line, literally. I think Elder Uchtdorf was a causality of that decision, and I don’t think it was a calculated demotion focused on getting him out of the FP. January 20, 2018 at 6:00 pm #326313Anonymous

Let’s not make any mistake. This move marginalizes Uchtdorf. The FP speaks about 3 times each in GC. The Q12 each speak only once.
Yeah, you are right. Also, FP members CONDUCT GC meetings. Collectively, they are the face of the Church.
I looked back at GC’s of the past to see how this plays out usually. The last representative GC was Oct 2014, because after that, health, death, and new calls have resulted in a bit of an unusual string, but back in Oct 2014, it was just a regular GC with all the FP/Q12 present, healthy and active. So, here was the breakdown:President TSM: Gave a brief welcome to GC Saturday Morning, Spoke in Priesthood Session and Sunday Morning, and gave some brief closing remarks at the end of the final session Sunday Afternoon.
1st C HBE: Spoke in Priesthood Session and Sunday Morning. Officiated in the Sustaining of Church Officers on Saturday Afternoon. Conducted Saturday Morning Session, Priesthood Session, and Sunday Afternoon Session.
2nd C DFU: Spoke in the General Women’s Session. Spoke Saturday Morning and in Priesthood Session. Conducted Saturday Afternoon Session and Sunday Morning Session.
1-BKP (President of the Q12):Spoke Saturday Morning
2-LTP: Spoke Saturday Afternoon
3-RMN: Sunday Morning
4-DHO: Saturday Afternoon
5-MRB: Sunday Afternoon
6-RGS: Sunday Afternoon
7-RDH: Sunday Morning
8-JRH: Saturday Afternoon
9-DAB: Sunday Afternoon
10-QLC: Priesthood Session
11-DTC: Saturday Morning
12-NLA: Saturday Afternoon
President of the Church spoke four times: two full talks and two brief remarks. Was at the pulpit in four out of six sessions
1st Counselor conducted three sessions, officiated in sustainings and spoke twice. Was at the pulpit in five out of six sessions.
2nd Counselor conducted two sessions, spoke three times. Was at the pulpit in five out of six sessions.
Each of the Q12 spoke once and had no other appearances, so they each were at the pulpit in one out of six sessions.
