GuestHi, my name is Brian. I’m a convert of 20 years. Met a woman who was a member and married her in the temple 54 weeks after getting baptized. I have a strong testimony, but I don’t wear blinders. I don’t accept every pronouncement by every General Authority as The Gospel Truth. I ask questions and seek understanding. Generally, I think there are three levels of doctrine: Doctrine found in the scriptures
- Doctrine pronounced the President of the Church
- Guidance offered by General Authorities and lesser priesthood authorities.
- Cultural standards and practices.
- Personal belief and practice.
For example, D&C 89:9 says, “And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.” Based on the four points above, this is:
The doctrine interpreted by Joseph Smith: it its day, this scripture was interpreted to mean coffee.
- More recently this has been generalized by some General Authorities to also include tea.
- Culturally, some members have generalized this to include any drink containing caffeine.
- Personally, I occasionally drink black tea, but usually decaffeinated tea. I like Barq’s Root Bear, which is caffeinated.
I believe everything told me by the Prophet or any General Authority is subject to verification through personal revelation.

GuestWelcome, you’re in the right place. nice initial summary of your thoughts. I look forward to hear more of your experience, strength, and hope in navigating the StayLDS existence…
I have a home in Virginia, but work mostly in India and now Europe. India is known for it’s amazing teas — the best is wonderful Darjeeling, but my favorite is Oolong from China.
Cheers!

GuestWelcome montereyredfox. I find the Word of Wisdom an interesting study, seeing how it is recorded in revelation, and the journey until how we see it is practiced today (can’t get temple ordinances without living the current standards). To me, this tells me a lot about other topics and doctrines and practices in the Church as well.
Glad to have you join the conversation. I look forward to learning from your posts!

GuestI like your levels of doctrine. When you look at different aspects of mormon doctrine it is rather interesting to see where each fits. February 6, 2012 at 1:53 am #249875Anonymous
