I have not seen this one but I listened to his other podcast on A Thoughtful Faith. He does make some interesting points/arguments, but as he said he disagrees with Todd Compton and Michael Quinn on some points I would like to see those details before I could say much else about his theories.

I finished listening to this today. The first comment made is by one called “square peg” and it set the tone for much of the discussion that followed. Here’s the first part:

    Quote:

I really am starting to understand why so many disaffected members become agnostics or atheists. It’s not because they necessarily want to-it’s the fact that it is ridiculously overwhelming to have to go to these ENDLESS lengths and depths to understand and live the mysteries of God! It can make your head feel like it’s going to explode in the process of trying to make heads or tails of it all. I thought it was said in the scriptures that God is a god of order. This is sheer chaos!

I think having such a sentiment is very unfortunate because Joseph’s complex life does not directly affect how orderly or chaotic God is. It makes sense that accusations would be made against Joseph and that much speculation would result because he was a powerful, controversial figure. People then come out to dispute the accusations and then it gets crazy. I am not speaking to the accuracy of the accusations now – they are many and diverse, some from solid sources and others that are very dubious. My view of him is wide open right now.

I listened and thought it was fairly balanced.

He sets outs most of the written evidence and then gives his opinion on whether they are credible or not.

He thinks some of the marriages were sexual (but many, including the two 14yos, were spiritually family connections). He also says some of the polyandry ones may have been sexual, but that apparently the wife was estranged from her first husband… so he feels she wasn’t ‘bed hopping.’ Does that make it more ok?

Frankly the whole thing is such a mess. Especially as the church today is so embarrassed by it all that no one will deal with it officially.

The official answer is so often “we simply don’t know.” What happened to Amos 3:7 and being a seer? I guess “we simply don’t know…”

    Harumph!
