GuestHe sounds like a good man. When you meet with them, focus simply on needing to slow down and work out your own understanding, almost like an investigator, since you feel like your baptism was too rushed. Avoid any and all doctrinal issues, if you can, and try to keep it as simple and straightforward as possible. (If you feel like sharing a bit of your past with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, that actually might help, since they might be even more sympathetic to that background.) Apologize for acting rashly in sending such an extreme letter, IF and only IF you feel that might help – but don’t apologize for anything else. Your situation is what it is, and it’s the moving forward that is important, not the past.

GuestThanks Ray, i’ll keep that in mind. He mentioned something about finding me a study buddy too which hopefully will be good,if he can do that i’ll look forward to it. December 9, 2014 at 8:57 pm #292642Anonymous
GuestHi Becca, Random thoughts.
I find it interesting that the disassociation letter says that you no longer believe in Creation. I wonder why that docrine would be singled out (as apposed to God, atonement, resurrection or any other non-LDS specific doctrine).

I agree but also find irony that we are likely to be sympathetic to sufferers of church abuse from other religions but for those of our church warn about getting “easily offended.”
I believe that in the final analysis the content of your character and how you live your life will matter much more than the specific denomination you belong to. However, the meeting with the bishop and the SP goes, I want you to know that I do not believe that your eternal destiny hangs in the balance.
Good luck!

GuestYeah, Roy, the irony didn’t escape me when I wrote it.

GuestHi Roy, I actually never believed in creation, something that the missionaries told me wasn’t necessary but i’ve since found that the church does teach creation even if it has no official doctrine on it and thus those who openly believe in evolution are often criticized and shunned.

Guest“Often” is correct – but it is because most people set evolution against religion as a theory that has to eliminate God completely from the creative process. It doesn’t have to be an either/or – and evolution is taught openly by the BYU Biology Department – and it isn’t rejected in the Church’s current, official statement. Young Earth creationism, on the other hand, in my own opinion, is in direct opposition to established scientific fact. I can understand Mormons rejecting evolution out of a belief it has to deny the existence of God and our relationship to the divine; I can understand previous generations in the Church accepting traditional Biblical chronology; current Mormons teaching young Earth creationism drives me nuts.

Me, too. My children (teens and adults) and I often discuss this. So many simply don’t seem to understand that it’s OK to believe differently, whether differently means dismissing the whole thing as fiction or believing only parts of the Biblical account are correct while others may be figurative. I fully understand why atheists and those who believe primarily in science only think that creationists are ignorant or stupid – and they do make the assumption that if one believes in any sort of creationism that it automatically means one believes in a young earth. Convincing them is just as difficult as convincing members who teach young earth.

GuestI’m glad for you. I hope everything goes quickly and well on their end and that you are given the time to go slowly on yours. All the best.

Good for you! It’s still a long process but the longest journey begins with a single step.
