GuestThe WofW says it is given as a way to avoid being trapped by addiction peddlers. Persoanlly, I think many of the early saints didn’t choose wisely when it was counsel, so the leadership upgraded (or downgraded) it to command. I have no proof of that right now, and I’m not ambitious enough to look, but it fits so many other things that have morphed into policy over the years.

GuestThe whole WoW doctrine & how it developed is very interesting. It seemed to take a generation to move it from “I teach them correct principles & they govern themselves”. To: “Thus saith the Lord”. Today if the Missionaries have an investigator who has been smoking or using coffee & tea from the
age of 13, they must demonstrate that they have quit to be baptised. This must prevent a lot of people from joining the church. Or, joining and
relapsing &/or becoming inactive.

GuestYep, Minyan Man. I would love a move away from requiring nearly temple-attendance-level standards for baptism.

Why is there a specific age in there?

GuestThat was the age my Mother started smoking (1930’s). That’s the story she told. She died at the age of 83. Both of my parents did everything they could to encourage their children not to
smoke. And, we didn’t. They couldn’t do it themselves.
