GuestWhen I have to deal with broken people trying to express love and concern for me in broken ways, I just try to drill down to their ultimate righteous desires the best I can and ignore the terrible delivery. Maybe it’s that they love me and are concerned for my welfare but they suck at expressing it. Fine. I ignore the sucky part and am grateful they love and are concerned for me. If the root motive is duty, then that’s not the root motive – they might be trying to earn their way into heaven which means they don’t think they’re worth it without a bunch of works on top of themselves, which means they are very sad inside and are desperately reaching out for something to help them feel better about themselves. Maybe their motive is to look good to others – get the numbers – same motives as the last one. Certainly it’s easy to look at a delivery and curse them for sucking, but do we not all suck? Are we not all begging for help and sucking at finding our way through life? Why can I suck but they can’t? I fall into judging people like this quite a lot, but when I can manage to get honest with myself, I can usually boil it down to me desperately wanting to feel better and so I’m just like they are inside – a weeping child desperately reaching for something to help me feel better and feel loved and feel worth while. I’ve found that loving people who are broken is one of my challenges because it gives me practice loving me. October 12, 2015 at 3:15 pm #304498Anonymous

GuestWise words rcronk. Thank you for the added perspective. Something inside of me wants to put “Do we not all suck?” on a pillow or bumper sticker. It’s kinda funny… because it is true.

I’m a little more partial to Uchtdorf’s “are any of us really doing all we can do?” That’s partly because I really like Pres. Uchtdorf and partly because I don’t really like the word suck in this context – but that’s just me.
