GuestA couple of folks at NOM are talking about StayLDS: cwald:
Quote:Hello all. I enjoy your site, and spend a lot of time reading topics. I have posted over at StayLDS for awhile, but I get myself in trouble occasionally, and I sometimes don’t like the whole “walking on eggshells” feeling I have over there. Thought I might try it out over here for a bit — little more freedom to “say it like it is.”
out.
steve hpias:Quote:Hey cwald! I post as Steve-hpias over on StayLDS. I post frequently over there and occasionally over here. I find both forums work for me depending on my mood. StayLDS works great when I want to have deep and serious discussions, especially for strategizing how to stay. Over here, I find the discussions to be generally lighter and more fun. I’m more of a lurker here, but that may change someday.
Zadok:Quote:And the thing I like here over StayLDS is that this place is much more active. I can spend several hours here reading, replying, commenting and I love the diversion from my otherwise depressing days. StayLDS has some great people and is helpful for those of us who still want to believe, but it moves at a much slower pace in my opinion.
Any thoughts?

GuestMy short summary answer: Working as intended. NOM is more free. Cwald is particularly upset lately with how he has been treated by people in his ward, and it honestly sounds like they were pretty crappy to him. He needs to vent more than he can do here at StayLDS. I’m cool with that.
NOM has a wider spread of belief levels (meaning much more negative). They have more posting traffic. We screen our participants more. I think we get high-quality, focused content in return. We’re slower, but we have REALLY thoughtful people contributing to the discussions. That is indicated in the comments about our conversations being more “deep and serious.”
I would rather do what we do really good, focusing on a particular slice of the spectrum, than try to be all things to all people. Let NOM be NOM, OM be OM, RfM and Post-Mormon do what they do. It’s all good with me. I like participating at NOM and OM too sometimes.

GuestBrian – glad to hear it. You’re clearly the most active here who is also there frequently. I almost never go to NOM, and I haven’t been here that much either. I felt I should probably pop in more often than I have been. Our bust up at MM and launch of wheatandtares.org has caused me to want to be more purposeful in how I’m engaging with the online Mormon community. Still working that out, though.

GuestI don’t know if I am there at NOM a lot. I pop in everyone once in a while. I only skim the Support and Gospel Doctrine / Philosophy sections. hawkgrrrl wrote:Our bust up at MM and launch of wheatandtares.org has caused me to want to be more purposeful in how I’m engaging with the online Mormon community. What do you mean? I am not sure. Just curious. Are you trying to do less, but be more effective? Do you mean craft your online presence better? Or just thinking about where you really want to invest your limited time and energies?

GuestI’m with Brian, in that I like the descriptions they wrote generally – but I would add that cwald’s “walking on eggshells” comment probably is a result of not being able to vent like he’s like to do. By that I mean really let go and throw stuff around the room. I really like cwald, and I feel for him, but I don’t want stuff thrown around the room here. October 7, 2010 at 3:53 pm #235733Anonymous
GuestAgreed and agreed!
You guys are great! You can’t be all things to all people and remain truly meaningful to anyone.

I haven’t totally sorted it out yet. I only WANT to be more purposeful.
MM was turning into a tool for John’s activism, which is his prerogative as the owner. I’d rather inspire than provoke. That’s as “purposeful” as I’ve gotten. It’s like in the movie Inception where they are planting the idea in the guy’s mind, they remind themselves that the more positive the idea that they plant, the more staying power it has. Rather than creating an idea that is vengeful and negative, they want to plant a cathartic message of love and acceptance.

That’s a really good description of me, Hawk.
It’s interesting that my personal blog is seen as conservative, generally (of course, R.Gary is an exception), even though many of the posts deal with things in a decidedly moderate or even fairly liberal way. People know I’m not into provocation, so they read my posts non-provocatively. That’s important to me.

GuestThese are all great comments, and why I think you all are my Heros!!! 😳 The site is a reflection of your honest views so it is all sincere. We sincerely care to inspire others, aren’t afraid to let others (or other sites) be what they are because that doesn’t threaten our views (very stage 5-ish), not shy about looking inwardly, and still bold to moderate or correct those that just want to be negative forces in the world.
To cwalds comments about the pace, I think that is a good thing…sometimes it is Better to take things slow and be patient to allow others to respond over time instead of all get in a frenzy over emotional issues. Of course, my pace has really slowed down as my personal life and work has demanded more of my energies.

Anyway, feedback is a good thing, but doesn’t always require a change in course. Thanks to all of you for your examples.
