It’s interesting that the reasons people leave or return to their faith communities are roughly the same across different religions. The first list (reasons she left) included a lot that we discuss here. The second list did also, perhaps it was too specific in places to her faith – but I’m sure we can think of Mormon equivalents. What would be on your list(s)?

I thought both lists were interesting and could definitely relate to several points on each.

    Thanks for posting this Hawkgrrrl.

That is so interesting to see that list. It makes me feel even more so that Mormons are Christians, we have the disaffected just like other Christian groups.

Here is the one I liked best from why she left that could apply to me:

    Quote:

    14. I left the church because there are days when I’m not sure I believe in God, and no one told me that “dark nights of the soul” can be part of the faith experience.

From the second list, I liked returning because

    Quote:

    8. Sucking up my pride and embracing the fact that, like it or not, I need community…and real community isn’t about surrounding myself with people just like me

Other reasons on my list to leave:

    – constant teaching at church that those in the fold are favored above those not

    – lists of rules that are over emphasized

    – boring meetings when I have such little free time to do enriching things outside of work

Other reasons to come back to church:

    – practice the gospel principles I study in the scriptures

    – feeling the spirit at church prompting me to try to do better in my life

    – meeting others

    Bump.

Heber stole the quotes I would pick out for myself

I stay in part to “prove now herewith” both God and our community that there is room in the tent for my family and myself OR if it is worth it to assume that there is room for myself there and respectfully but insistently act like there is.

One of the main reasons on my list of reasons to leave is that I am not confident that the community of Saints can minister to my child effectively and comfortably.

One of the main reasons on my list of reasons to stay is that there are amazing women ministering to my child (and myself) who love her (and me) enough to take time to minister to us – who see her acting younger than her years, but love talking to her because they know she will say something unique and go great lengths to associate with my daughter. A sister took 45 minutes this week to accept a phone call for me to vent/discuss better ways of raising my daughter in positive, supportive ways.
