    Not Peace, But Division

    (Matthew 10:34-36)

49I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! 51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

I find this most interesting. Our doctrine teaches that families can be together forever, yet here Jesus says that he came to divide your household. It reminds me of what Katzpur shared about her son wanting to remove his name from the church records because he didn’t want to be associated with it because of what they are doing to the children of gay parents (What damage is being done to these children again?)

I don’t know any of the answers here, hell, I’m not even sure I know the question. I just think it’s an interesting paradox and can see it happening in the church right now. I imagine, if someone wants to distance themselves from the church, it doesn’t necessarily mean they want to distance themselves from a loved one who participates in that church. That’s why I see the teaching of eternal families as such a beautiful thing. It doesn’t matter what you guys agree or disagree on, you would still choose to be together if you had the option. The family ties are so strong, they withstand a difference of opinion.

Yes, Jesus was a radical that taught some things that might make us uncomfortable and even a few things that we, as a church community, do not believe in.

Unfortunately, most members read this as the rejections of non-LDS family members when someone wants to join the LDS church. I can be interpreted that Christ expects us to choose His church over family members. http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7155&hilit=mother

Very beautiful. A wise friend once told me that all families that become “one” will remain so in the eternities. Families that do not become one in any form will not be made so by a special ritual. IOW, “eternal families” are symbolic of what we hope to achieve here on earth.

Please read Silent Dawning’s thread and his thoughts on this scripture and add to that conversation.
