GuestYep, my parents called me back yesterday and asked me flat out if I was gay. They just cannnot process that a straight, RM, married in the temple, church leadership calling member could possible be sympathetic towards our gays brothers and sisters, and question the whole Prop 8 and anti-same sex marriage stance of the church. They were VERY serious, and indicated that during conversation with siblings Monday, this, and the fact that I have chosen to follow Satan rather than the LDS prophets because I just want to sin indiscriminately, are the only two possible reasons that could be the cause of all my dissatisfaction with the church
My family is absolutely insane.
-sigh-

GuestSo sorry brother. FWIW I think my family would have very similar reactions. I call it the simplistic black/white paradigm. Everything must fit in the box. April 6, 2011 at 7:01 pm #242264Anonymous
GuestSorry to hear that! April 6, 2011 at 8:06 pm #242265Anonymous
GuestI know this is no laughing matter, but I couldn’t help myself. I laughed. That seems sooo crazy, but I’m sure that to your folks it makes perfect sense. A good object lesson in the fact that people just plain see things differently.

GuestI didn’t want to chuckle, but, like brown, I couldn’t help myself. A sense of humor in the face of idiocy is important, I think. Your biological family AND your local church family are both bonkers. There just HAS to be some real comic gold in that setting.
I also am sorry to read it, however. Nobody should have to be asked that question for that reason. It simply is totally illogical and idiotic.

Unfortunately, this intolerant behavior doesn’t sound all that surprising or unusual to me. I could see a lot of different Church members including my own family acting almost the same way if they knew I didn’t believe in the Church anymore. Even if they don’t say it directly to your face and try to act nice in person many of them will still think this way and gossip about others in a disrespectful way. They should probably have conference talks and lessons specifically about this but instead we have Elder Christofferson talking about “correction” almost as if being judgmental toward others is a good thing and being too nice is supposedly bad because it will encourage rampant permissiveness.

GuestWow Cwald — you get it from all sides!!! I’m sorry to hear that. You’ve convinced me I REALLY DO need to keep my mouth shut around TBM’s. April 7, 2011 at 3:58 am #242270Anonymous
GuestNot all of them, SD – but certainly the ones in cwald’s life. 🙄 I think you can never stop commenting here, c – just so that we have a chance to feel better about our own lives on a regular basis.

GuestYa know, cwald, I feel like I am just finally getting to know you. For about a week I have been thinking of you as a plain old Mormon guy instead of an alien. April 7, 2011 at 4:57 am #242272Anonymous

I think the shock is finally wearing off. It’s funny now, I suppose. Just one more notch on the LDS insanity post.

My avatar is symbolic of how I feel about my place in the church and within my own family. It is dead on.

GuestYou know what they say, “you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family”. My answers to these questions are perhaps cliches, “live and let live” and “God loves all his children”. That doesn’t mean that one has to approve of gay marriage, it just means that God loves gay people too.

GuestYou might have caught The Gay from talking to people on the interwebs. I know someone who knew a guy who’s friend said he knew someone that happened to. The interwebs is where Satan has the most power … well, except for on “the waters.” (/sarcasm off)

GuestSo would that be “Gay-tanic”? Sorry!
