GuestI was looking through some of my journal entries over the last year. One thing I have come to love about keeping a journal is that I am able to view snapshots what I was thinking at moments in the past. This has become even more meaningful as I have learned about how the mind rebuilds memories in such a way that it is easy for our current understanding of the world to taint what we remember about our past. Reading my journal, I was surprised to find the my faith crisis had actually started a bit earlier than I had remembered. I wondered a little bit if my current reading, and listening of the Mormon Stories podcasts lately had affected the way I remembered the events and questions leading to my crisis. I was surprised to find that this was not the case; I was clearly articulating my concerns six months ago in my journal; it was nice to hear them being said by others though. I also found that in the midst of my struggles I have had some real moments of personal revelation that I had kind of forgotten about. Here is just a little bit from one entry that really hit me as I was rereading:
“There are many people who are totally ignorant of many [academic facts], but are wise when it comes to practical matters. What good does it do you to know the truth of how the universe functions if it does not influence how you live? There are many who believe in many scientifically false ideas, but live lives of great moral integrity. In some ways… who cares if someone thinks the world is flat! This will have no bearing on their honesty, work ethic, fidelity, or any number of things that we value. It is more important to
becomethan it is to know.” This brought some much needed perspective to me tonight. I have become so obsessed lately with finding out the “truth” about God and the church. Correct and accurate knowledge is important, it is not the only thing that matters. I think I really need to put more service and character building activities into the mix.
