GuestI appreciate that Elder Oaks spoke about conversion to Christ as opposed to conversion to the church. October 2, 2016 at 12:00 am #314933Anonymous
GuestMe, too. Just noticing that he, my dad and Elder Hales were all born in ’32.

GuestI don’t particularly care for the song Ye Elders Of Israel (the lyrics are too us-vs-them for my taste) but that was an absolutely rousing rendition. Loved it. Now they are singing ‘Love At Home’ – another song I hate but I love that it’s being sung by an all male choir. My husband even commented on it – this song is usually associated with women and sung on Mother’s Day. Family love is just as much for men as it is for women!

GuestI like that Holland is acknowledging that 100% home teaching is just flat out not possible in a lot of wards. It’s not like it was in the days when everyone lived in Utah. October 2, 2016 at 12:41 am #314936Anonymous

I didn’t generally care for his talk because it’s just another of the same one we’ve heard a thousand times. However, I do like that he makes the point that home teaching is not about the monthly visit.
And I don’t much care for this next guy either. One BoM talk was enough for today.

GuestIt did take DFU awhile to get to the point, but the point is well taken. I am no doubt an Amulek, and I was listening three years ago when DFU delivered “Come, Join With Us.” However, I don’t think most of us Amuleks are listening to GC. October 2, 2016 at 1:30 am #314938Anonymous
GuestDFU talked about “David” and “Jacob” .. David being an attorney who joined the church, became very anti-LDS, resigned, discussed the church for 10 years with “Jacob” and eventually was re-baptized. My DH was “Jacob”.
“David” is a bright, capable, and sacastic guy who really appreciated non-judgmental discussions on ANY church topic.
I wish there was more open non-judgmentalal discussion of issues.

GuestI’m still floored by Elder Uchtdorf saying the Amuleks around us could be young, old,…male or female….. He really has a way of opening things up.

Amen.
So cool that you know the whole story.

GuestI realize Holland’s talk was more of the same but I liked it. It was a spirit of the law versus letter of the law talk. I’ll put it this way, almost every time I’ve heard a quorum president or even stake president talk about home teaching they usually bring up percentages. We hardly ever talk about families and meeting needs. I thought it was a good reminder that HTing isn’t about getting 100%, it’s about ministering… and I think we get too caught up in following a program. It’s a turn-off. Uchtdorf… has he had a talk in every session so far?

Spoken as someone who’s never made it a half mile to the next freeway exit and gas station through inappropriate use of the starter and clutch.

And it’s oh so wonderful for us singles. There’s no love at home; just a cat expecting dinner.
…and it’s not even my cat, just turns up on the porch every evening and keeps the squirrels from waking me up at sunrise.

Sounds like love to me.

I’d be interested in knowing whether David went back to full orthodoxy or some kind of nuanced approach (though I suppose everyone’s approach is nuanced on some level or other but you know what I mean).
I’ve already heard some murmurings/rumblings on both sides of the fence. Some orthodox family members want their less believing spouses to be more like David and some people that are in the shoes that David was in during his 10 year sabbatical are wondering how David feels about his story being used to spark off a new round of rescue efforts.
I don’t have a dog in the show, I’m probably more like David, but inquiring minds…

GuestDavid is a very bright and capable and sarcastic litigator. He is a really funny guy. You would enjoy him. His feeling is that he tried literally everything that the world had to offer. He couldn’t find anything that brought him the peace that he found in the LDS church. I think he quit looking too hard at history and decided to just focus on loving people in the here and now. Doing so within the structure of the LDS church works for him. I don’t think you would call him “orthodox”.
DH knew him professionally. Both are litigators. They would bump into each other occasionally, started talking, then emailing and texting and calling back and forth. Just esoteric talks about religion and faith and the church. Never any judgement or pressure to return. Just discussions and genuine concern for him as an individual. It spanned 10 years.
David decided to be re-baptized. He called DH out of the blue and asked if he would do the deed. It was all very low-key .. except for brunch. The waffles were amazing.
Re-baptism worked for him. Every one is on a different journey. Sometimes, we see someone reach a destination that we don’t want and we cheapen it. That isn’t fair. It was a perfect destination for him. Just be happy for him .. and know that he would be happy to see you find a destination that spoke to your soul.
