GuestI was talking to my kind, loving, about 85 year old neighbor yesterday. She told me about her experience trying to get her temple recommend renewed. Her inactive granddaughter brought her there. She doesn’t have much money so I guess she was about $50 short on her tithing. Her bishop barely let her pass. But the stake president wasn’t going to let her receive her recommend. Her granddaughter marched in slapped down her checkbook and paid what she owed because she knew how important it was for her grandmother to go the the temple!!! When will they change this requirement for entering the temple! Crazy! April 19, 2011 at 1:59 pm #242776Anonymous
GuestI think all of us here echo your hope and frustration with this situation, p&j – even though we aren’t unanimous in exactly what requirements we would change and how we would solve the issue. In the case of your grandmother, I would love a “grandmother clause” – that the general rules of entrance, no matter what they are, are waived for anyone who has attended the temple for at least 40 years. In those cases, the final question would be the only question asked – with no discussion or questioning involved. If the answer is, “Yes” – the person’s recommend is renewed. Period.
(I figure 40 years is a good Biblical length of time.)

GuestPeaceandjoy, What surprises me is the fundamentalism on the part of the grandmother. I wonder if the reaction of the bishop and SP was in direct proportion to the feelings she expressed about not bing a full tithe payer.
The reason I say this is because I frequently get my recommend renewed while “owing” tithing. I’m horrible about carrying a checkbook and so I will forget for weeks, even months at the time to pay and the money will accumulate in my bank account. I still count myself as a full tithe payer. And when I remember to bring a checkbook to church, I pay tithing for all the months I didn’t. Remember, tithing is supposed to be a tenth of you ANNUAL increase. As of this writing, I haven’t paid tithing yet this year! Guess it’s time to order checks….
Oh how I wish we could pay online.
I wonder why this little old woman felt so uncomfortable that she had to confess a $50 shortfall. Why didn’t she say “Yes” and add the $50 to next month’s tithing envelope? There’s a spirit of the law that governs intent as well as a letter of the law.

We can – and some who participate here do. The directions are in a link in a thread somewhere in our archives. I’ll try to find it and repost the link in this thread.
(If anyone else finds it first, please save me the time and effort to look.)

GuestFollow the instructions in link. There are lots of other web pages that explain the process, but this one works.thisBasically, you fill out a form and start an email conversation with the tithing department. Once they accept your information, you are invited to make a donation through your online banking institution. They will verify that they have received the donation, and then you’re good to go. You will need your membership record number.

GuestI think the question about tithing is along the lines of “Are you a full tithe payer?” It isn’t have you paid a full tithe on all your increase up to today’s date? Members and leaders need to realize this. I know quite a few members pay tithing once a year, at the end of the year. It doesn’t keep them out of the temple if their recommend interview comes before the yearly payment.

That’s exactly how I’ve always interpreted the question.
