Richard Bushman (“Rough Stone Rolling”) is a well-respected historian. He tried to be as objective as he could when he wrote that book, and I recommend it highly.

I also LOVE the fact that Joseph described himself as a rough stone rolling down a hill and getting the edges knocked off in the process – and that he is the most chastise person, by far, in the D&C. He was a real, complex person – not the caricature about whom we hear(d) so much.

    Hippo,

Just know that we care about you. Myself and several people I know have been in the place of mental torment about trying to reconcile how we feel about the gospel with what you uncover about it and when the two do not match up, I know it makes for a frustrating experience in the church. I just hope this will help you really sort it out.

Part of the problem is stated by you, scthomas – the lines between the church and the gospel are blurred. Trying to separate church teachings from the gospel was helpful to me. You didn’t uncover those things that bother you about the gospel – you uncovered them about the church.
