GuestI think its pretty easy to order new ones that fit right, without having to alter them. I think sometimes I wonder why non-mormons make such a to-do about “magic underwear”…but then I remember we make it a big deal in the church, so that’s probably why.
Does anyone know…is it actually in the handbook that they are not supposed to touch the ground?

GuestDoug, “FTW” means “for the win” – or shorthand for, “I’d like to nominate that comment as one of the best comments of the week.” I think you read it as if it was reversed.

Last time I checked, it wasn’t – and I only checked because someone else asked. I haven’t checked the new version. I hope it’s not.
The person who instructed my son in the temple before his mission mentioned that “common belief” – and said it was a cultural custom taught by some temple workers in the past (because some Temple Presidents had believed it was a sign of respect) that had taken on the level of assumed command for many people. He voluteered that info without being asked and said the Temple Presdent had asked them to address it – because so many members asked about it. (It probably started when some extremist told some Temple President that he never let the garment touch the floor out of resepct for the garment, and the Temple President probably thought it was a good idea and started teaching it as a good way to show respect. Coming from a Temple President, patrons probably started telling others that it was a standard rule – and one more rule was born.)
So, sometimes we just ask too many questions.

GuestYeah, I knew about ‘FTW’. It was the ‘Brown’ part I was poking fun at, given the previous post about bodily functions and their potential … um … effects on underclothing. I really need to stop subjecting you people to my unique sense of humor. November 4, 2011 at 5:39 pm #247171Anonymous
GuestI remember in 1964 when I went through the Idaho Falls temple being told to treat garments like the flag and not let then touch the floor. It’s strange becuase every time I do that I remember this elderly gentleman telling me that. Maybe it stuck in my mind since I went to the temple that day not having a clue what was going on or even what garments were. It was a bit of a shock since for the endowment they were one piece and had a collar and string ties. The good old days. November 4, 2011 at 5:42 pm #247172Anonymous

Does anyone know…is it actually in the handbook that they are not supposed to touch the ground? Not that I checked or that I care — but it was mentioned in the ME CHI podcast last Winter as a new addition to CHI I.

Where, How? If it’s easy that, a simple internet search should turn up that information.

GuestI talked about this with jwald. She is small and petite. She told me she has NEVER found garments that fit her well. So it might not be as simple as some people think for those who do not have the average body type. November 6, 2011 at 1:31 am #247177Anonymous

Yes, they are not to touch the floor. CHI 2 is available to all, even non-members.

GuestI know this will appear to be parsing of the worst kind by some people here, but there is a HUGE difference in my mind between “garments should not touch the ground” (the question asked here) and “garments should be kept off the floor” (from the CHI linked in Thoreau’s comment – and thanks for the link, btw, since I completely forgot the CHI is available online now). I wouldn’t think of leaving my garments lying around on the floor, but I have no problem with them touching the ground – even as I wish this particular “should” was not in the CHI. I get the respect factor in not “keeping them on the floor” – but I also get the interpretation that says, therefore, they never should touch the floor. It’s hard to condemn people who take the latter meaning from that statement.
“Treat the garment with respect” is good enough for me – and the current “should” probably happened because some member complained to some leader about her husband tossing his garments on the floor along with the rest of his dirty clothing. *sigh*

GuestYeah Ray, it’s frustrating. But i think an honest person has to give this one as a “win” to that guy who thinks there are 613 mormon commandments. I mean, yeah, it;s stupid, but yes, it’s a commandment in writing. It’s stupid yes, but it is a commandment. November 6, 2011 at 8:17 am #247180Anonymous
GuestHere’s what drives me nuts about almost all church commandments. The CHI has about 10 paragraphs of very specific rules about garments and then sticks this in there:
Quote:Members who have made covenants in the temple should be guided by the Holy Spirit to answer for themselves personal questions about wearing the garment.
So which is it? Do I follow the spirit, or the very specific rulebook?

I like loopholes in situations like this – but I don’t like that we have to ask the question above. So, I go with “follow the spirit” and “treat the garment with respect”.

GuestWhen the guidebook and personal needs are in conflict, go with the Spirit. Also, recognize that much of what the handbook says we should do in our personal lives is unobservable, and therefore unenforceable. Much is left to the members to worship according to the dictates of their own conscience. -
