GuestThis is a topic that has been discussed at times on the forum. I did a post at BCC today that talks about this notion of whose role it is to ascertain worthiness in the TR interview. I believe it has mostly changed from the bishop’s role to the individual’s – which is one thing where the church is exerting less control than previously. I also share some of the history of how discernment was used in the process. See what you think (there is also a poll):

GuestI looked it over and my view now is that practically, if your life is not an open book and visible to everyone to make their own judgments, then its the individual’s conscience that guides. Its comforting to know that beyond the basic TR questions, they can’t start caboosing other things on to the questions — and the catch all question “is there anything that makes you feel unworthy (paraphrased)” puts that responsibility clearly on the individual’s shoulders. Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way now.

GuestThis is an interesting topic & a good article. My opinion is, we are responsible to determine our own worthiness.
The Bishop is there to counsel, give encouragement & help us progress on this journey.
By the time we come to the interview with the Bishop, we have (usually) gone through an extensive self review (I hope).
I personally believe that there are no Bishops that can “read” your mind or soul for worthiness.
Also, if we were completely worthy, without blemish, there is no need to attend the temple or participate in the sacrament.
I’ve always wondered, if we were completely worthy to attend the temple, why are there locks on the lockers in the dressing rooms?
I know this isn’t a new observation.

My grandpa used to say…the locks are on the lockers because of people like him that can’t remember where they put their clothes.

Isn’t it interesting that those that are being disciplined for sin are not allowed to participate in either of these? Sometimes I think those are the ones that specifically need the sacrament, moreso than ever.
Now…if you play bishop for a minute, and you ask all the questions and the person can fairly answer them all, but the last question they say they are not worthy, they can’t forgive themselves for something that you don’t think should keep them out of the temple, what do you do?

GuestI was really interested in the comments from those who have given TR interviews who said they clearly discerned something was amiss in the interviewee, but also discerned that they were to do nothing about it! Fascinating. -
