GuestI want to believe in an afterlife, but the only decent evidence we have for the existence of an afterlife is NDE (near-death experience.) The fact that classical NDEs have consistent common elements supports both the biological and the supernatural explanation of NDE. There is no consensus among medical professionals about whether NDE is an actual experience with the afterlife or is caused chemically and electrically by a dying brain, and there are intelligent and well-educated people on both sides of the debate. The fact that there is wide disagreement on the subject among medical professionals indicates to me that I will probably not be able to come to a conclusion as to whether or not NDEs are real encounters with the afterlife by a survey of the available literature and research on NDE. If a neurologist can’t answer that question, why do I think that I could? Mercyngrace posted her NDE on this site, which I enjoyed reading, and I am sure that nothing could have been more real to her. Other research has refuted some of NDE, such as the out-of-body experience, and our ability to duplicate NDE with hallucinogens supports the biological explanation. Since NDE is the only thing that gives me a good reason to believe that there may be an afterlife, I’d like to hear other peoples’ takes on the origin of NDE.

GuestWe have at least a couple of threads about this question. I bumped up the longest thread, but here is another one: September 17, 2012 at 4:38 am #259521Anonymous

GuestSeveral interesting experiments have been conducted in this regard. In one, a doctor put objects on top of closets etc, where patients couldn’t see them, and they were asked to describe them if they had an NDE. Forget afterlife, what about rebirth?!
